Božava: bay, boat moorings and a summer excursion

Božava is located in a bay surrounded by pine forest. Boaters can use designated moorings where boats are accommodated; water and electricity are available for vessels. Check the local information before planning to use these facilities.

During the summer months, visitors can take a tourist train from Božava to Sakarun Beach. This makes the ride a seasonal option for a beach visit. Check the current timetable before setting out. If you are looking for an overnight stay in Božava, you can weigh these two points according to your travel plans: the moorings are relevant for boaters, while the tourist train is useful for a summer excursion to Sakarun.

In the wider destination of Općina Sali

Another regional perspective is the wider destination of Općina Sali. Its distinct nature and history themes include Telašćica Bay, Saljsko polje and the culture of Sali. Telašćica Bay was declared a nature park in 1988; the nature park includes sheltered beaches and steep cliffs. Saljsko polje has been protected as a special botanical reserve since 1969. Olive trees up to 700 years old grow there. The regional overview therefore brings together different landscapes and protected areas: the beaches and cliffs of the nature park, and the botanical reserve with its old olive trees.

Sali is the settlement closest to Telašćica Nature Park and the easiest access point from the mainland. A specific cycling route also starts there: cycle route No. 13 runs from Sali via Vela Ploča and Čuh Polje to Dugonjive and Mala Proversa. It is 7.9 kilometres long. Check the condition of the route locally before setting out.

Building history and festival traditions in Sali

Sali has two distinct historical reference points for its architectural and church history. The Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary has a monumental wooden high altar from the 17th century. The Church of St John in Sali, in Stivanje polje, is first mentioned in a document in 1064 or 1065. One date refers to an altar from the 17th century, the other to an early documentary mention of the church.

Saljske užance is another festive highlight in Sali. The local festival lasts three days and has been held for more than 50 years. During the festival, Tovareća mužika parades through the entire village, stopping at several places to perform. Its rhythm instruments include various drums as well as old iron irons filled with pebbles. Budnica is associated with Sunday morning during Saljske užance. If you want to plan your trip around the festival, confirm the dates in advance.
