Church singing, circle dancing and the village’s location between Kotari and Bukovica give Lišane Ostrovičke a distinct identity. This offers three perspectives to consider when choosing your destination: landscape, local culture and the transport routes through the municipality. The local music and dance forms in particular make the cultural side of a stay tangible.

Village between Kotari and Bukovica

Lišane Ostrovičke is considered a typical village of the Ravni kotari. It stretches along the edge of a field on a sun-facing slope and lies beside a drinking-water spring. Its semicircular shape forms a natural boundary between the Kotari to the south and the karst plateau of Bukovica to the north. This location gives the landscape a clear orientation: the village stands on the boundary between the two areas mentioned.

Trolokve also lies partly within the municipality. There are marsh and lake sediments of sand and mud there. The marshy area is due to the impermeable muddy subsoil. Thus, the landscape of the municipality includes not only the village’s hillside and field-edge setting, but also the sediments and marshy ground of Trolokve.

Singing, dancing and traditional instruments

Lišanska misa is a religious folk-singing tradition related to the secular singing of the area around Lišane. The cultural association KUD “Sv. Nikola Tavelić” works to preserve local traditions, including this form of singing. Movement and rhythm are central to the Kukulešće: men and women hold hands and dance in a circle, keeping the soles of their feet flat on the ground and making jumps. The Cvitara player sets the rhythm. Cvitaras are harmonica-like instruments that were played in Lišane during circle dances.

Other traditional instruments include the diple and svirale, also called dvojnice. Diple are wind instruments played with six fingers and made from specially treated goat or sheep skin. Svirale are wooden shepherd’s instruments with two pipes: the right is used to finger the melody, while the left provides accompaniment. The instruments are not interchangeable here: the diple are distinguished by their material and playing technique, while the two pipes of the svirale have different musical roles.

Churches with different historical reference points

The parish church of Sv. Nikola Tavelić was built between 1975 and 1977 as a votive shrine, based on plans by architect Vinko Galić, and was consecrated in 1978. A significantly older reference point is the Baroque parish church of Sv. Mihovil arkanđel in Lišane Ostrovičke, which dates from 1663. These two dates offer different points of reference in time when exploring the churches of the area.

Local tradition and getting there

Local history also includes a traditional nighttime small-sided football tournament. After the population returned, residents of Lišane began organizing the tournament. It adds another aspect of local community life to the musical and church traditions.

The Zadar–Benkovac–Kistanje–Knin road and the Zadar–Knin railway line run through the municipality. The “Pirovac” motorway junction on the Adriatic Motorway is 15 kilometres from the municipality. This is a distance, not a travel time.

When choosing a base for an overnight stay, you can use the character of the destination as a deciding factor: the village layout, churches, musical traditions and location between Kotari and Bukovica shape the focus of a stay. Search specifically for hotels in the Municipality of Lišane Ostrovičke and, when considering a particular offer, compare its location and conditions with your plans.
