In Lišane Ostrovičke, an unusually large rock inscription makes a striking impression: “Hajduk–Split–Lišane” is about 100 metres long, and the coat of arms measures approximately nine metres in diameter. The inscription is located below the railway line above Nimci. Its dimensions offer a concrete introduction to the area, whose cultural traces range from traditional singing and dance forms to archaeological finds.

Between three geographical regions

Lišane Ostrovičke lies at the meeting point of Bukovica, Ravni kotari, and Zagora, and on the eastern edge of Ravni kotari. Transport routes also help define its location: the village is on the Benkovac–Skradin state road and the Zadar–Knin railway line. If you are considering travelling by train, check the current service in advance. In the wider destination of Općina Lišane Ostrovičke, the “Pirovac” motorway junction on the Adriatic Motorway is 15 kilometres from the municipality.

Song, dance, and living tradition

In Lišane Ostrovičke, the church folk music tradition known as “Lišanska misa” is kept alive. It is closely related to the secular singing of the area around Lišane. The cultural association KUD Sv. Nikola Tavelić helps preserve this tradition and is also recognised as a bearer of knowledge about Ojkanje. Ojkanje, also locally known as Orzenje, is still performed in Lišane. The tradition was added to UNESCO’s List of Intangible Cultural Heritage in Need of Urgent Safeguarding in 2010. If you would like to attend a performance, check for specific dates; availability may vary.

The traditional performance culture surrounding Kukulešće, Cvitara, and Diple is also part of the cultural context of the wider Općina Lišane Ostrovičke. In the Kukulešće, men and women hold hands and dance in a circle, placing their feet flat and jumping to the rhythm of the Cvitara. Cvitare are harmonica-like instruments that were played in Lišane for circle dances. Diple are traditional wind instruments, played with six fingers and made from specially treated goat or sheep skin. Svirale, or Dvojnice, are wooden shepherd’s instruments with two pipes: the right one is used to finger the melody, and the left one provides accompaniment. These instruments can thus be distinguished by their materials and musical function.

Church and architectural history

The parish church of Sv. Nikola Tavelić was built as a votive shrine from 1975 to 1977, to plans by architect Vinko Galić, and consecrated in 1978. The construction and consecration mark two different dates in its history. The church also houses a copy of a painting that was exhibited in St Peter’s Basilica in Rome. The copy was returned to its original pre-war location in the church.

Archaeological traces from different periods

Archaeological finds in Lišane range from remains dating to Antiquity and the Middle Ages to graves with stone cover slabs of the so-called Old Croatian type. These graves date to the 8th and 9th centuries. The foundations of an Old Croatian church have also been found.
