Three former shepherd settlements formed the starting point for Belej, which later grew into a single village. There are also specific cultural and architectural features: a restored dry-stone wall, protected parts of the historic ensemble, and wooden Baroque statues in the parish church. When planning your trip, it is worth distinguishing these local themes from the museums and guided tours offered in the wider destination of Mali Lošinj.

Village Development, Protection and the Dry-Stone Wall

Belej’s spatial structure developed from three former shepherd settlements, which later merged into a single village. This origin story describes the development of the settlement; individual structures offer a different perspective on its history. Parts of Belej lie within the boundaries of the Category C protection area for historic ensembles, which is described as protection of the surrounding area. This adds a distinct spatial protection designation to the settlement’s development.

One specific structure is the damaged, 185-metre-long dry-stone wall beside the D100 state road in Belej. It was restored in 2015 as part of the KAMENI MOST project. Unlike the development from several former settlements, this information concerns a particular wall, its length and a completed restoration. If you are interested in local history and architectural heritage, you will find two different scales here: the merging of settlements and the history of a single restored structure.

Ecclesiastical Art and Feast Days

The older art collection in Belej’s parish church includes wooden Baroque statues of Saint George and Saint Roch. Each saint is celebrated in Belej on a separate date: St George on 23 April and St Roch on 16 August. The works of ecclesiastical art are thus accompanied by two specific dates in the annual calendar. If you would like to plan your trip around one of the feast days, check the current programme in advance, as it may vary.

Sea, Harbour and Cycling Route

Within the Belej planning area, the marine part of Zela Harbour lies within area HR3000161 Cres-Lošinj, which is designated as a dolphin reserve. Luka Zela–Koromačno is a separate piece of infrastructure: the facility was built to provide shared moorings on an existing breakwater. As mooring regulations may change, check the specific conditions of use in advance.

For a longer activity, a challenging 61-kilometre cycling loop runs from Cres through Orlec, Belej and Plat and back to Cres. The route follows asphalt and gravel roads. This places Belej within a multi-stage route, rather than equating the cycling tour with a short loop around the village. If you plan to ride this route, check the conditions along the way.

Cultural Highlights Elsewhere in the Wider Destination of Mali Lošinj

There are also a range of cultural highlights beyond Belej in the wider destination of Mali Lošinj. In the centre of Mali Lošinj, the Museum of Apoxyomenos opened in the Kvarner Palace in May 2016; it is dedicated to a single artefact. The Fritzi Palace houses two of Mali Lošinj’s most important art collections: the Piperata Collection of Old Masters and the collection of Croatian masters belonging to Andro Vid Mihičić. The latter comprises around 360 works of art.

In Osor, the Archaeological Collection is housed in a Renaissance building erected in the first half of the 15th century. The building was protected as a cultural monument in 1964. Another highlight can be found in Veli Lošinj: the freestanding circular tower complex, Kula, in the centre of the town was built in the 15th century. Its permanent exhibition covers the history of Veli Lošinj, its immediate surroundings and the southern part of the island of Lošinj, from prehistory to the present day, with a particular focus on maritime and tourism traditions.

The city tour “Lošinj kroz stoljeća” includes a walk through the kalice of Mali Lošinj. If you plan to join this tour, check the current schedule, as dates may change. Along with the museums, it offers another cultural perspective on the wider destination of Mali Lošinj, distinct from the village history and feast days in Belej.
