On Umpiljak Hill above Mali Lošinj, Providenca brings landscape and history together: this cultural landscape interprets Lošinj’s natural, cultural and maritime heritage. A self-guided tour leads through six interpretation points and presents Lošinj as an island of captains. Here, nature and seafaring are not separate themes, but parts of the island’s history.
Maritime history in several places
The Museum of Apoxyomenos was established in Mali Lošinj as a permanent home for the sculpture. In Veli Lošinj, the Kula Museum-Gallery Centre (The Tower) presents Lošinj’s maritime traditions and seafaring history in a permanent exhibition. The Tower also displays a life-size replica of the Apoxyomenos: the bronze sculpture was discovered in the waters near Veli Lošinj. The original and the replica therefore offer two different ways to explore the subject: the sculpture’s history and the island’s maritime heritage.
The Nerezinac also tells the story of seafaring. Its exhibition on board is divided into three sections and covers crew life, provisions, cargo, maritime routes and shipbuilding. The Nerezinac is included in the Republic of Croatia’s Register of Protected Cultural Goods. If you are interested in life aboard a ship, you will find a broad range of topics here, from provisions to routes.
Fragrant garden and local connections
More than 250 native fragrant plant species grow in the Lošinj Fragrant Garden. Traditional dry-stone walls, known as Gromače, enclose the planting areas. The garden’s theme is complemented by a range of activities, including scent walks, workshops, tastings, exhibitions, performances and competitions. As the programme may change, check in advance which activities are taking place.
Providenca’s picnic at the Captain’s Table offers a culinary connection to the island’s history. The picnic basket contains local specialities linked to the captains of Lošinj and the island’s maritime past. If you are planning to take part, check the reservation details in advance, as they may change.
Coastlines, trails and underwater landscapes
Lošinj is a Croatian island with a highly indented coastline and numerous coves. The shores of Lošinj’s many coves are low and easily accessible, and mostly rocky; some stretches are covered with white pebbles that gradually give way to a sandy seabed. This gives the coastline varied surfaces and makes the coves an important part of the landscape.
Across the Lošinj archipelago, hiking and cycling trails of varying lengths and difficulty lead to viewpoints, beaches and coves, fishing villages, secluded chapels and villages, shepherds’ shelters and old military fortifications. For a specific route, consider the Osoršćica–Nerezine hiking trail: it runs for about 10 kilometres along the northern part of the island and reaches an elevation of 588 metres at Televrin. Below the summit are the Church of Sv. Mikula and the Sv. Gaudencija Cave. The distance, elevation and two landmarks give the trail a clear profile without requiring you to estimate how long the hike will take.
The diversity of the surroundings is also revealed underwater. Snorkelling spots around Lošinj and the nearby islands of Ilovik, Susak and Unije feature underwater landscapes, brightly coloured fish, Posidonia oceanica seagrass meadows and hidden coves. They complement the hiking and coastal experiences with a different perspective on the island world.
Getting there and regional context
Lošinj can be reached by land, sea or air. The larger harbours include Mali Lošinj, Veli Lošinj and Nerezine. If you plan to travel by ferry or plane, check the relevant sailing and flight schedules separately before your trip.
In the wider Kvarner Bay destination, the Putovima Frankopana cultural and tourist route offers a distinct historical focus. In Primorje-Gorski Kotar County, it includes a total of 17 Frankopan castles and three religious sites. This regional perspective complements Lošinj’s maritime themes without suggesting that the places are one and the same.
