Discover Male Mune through its language, traditional dress and Muna bell-ringing custom. The bell-ringing tradition is also open to visitors from outside the area during the carnival season. When planning your trip, it is worth keeping an eye on seasonal performance dates and local routes.
Language and Traditional Dress in Male Mune
Male Mune is part of the Mune dialect area. An archaic Chakavian acute accent has been preserved in local speech. Traditional women’s dress is also part of the local cultural heritage: it is preserved in both Male Mune and Vele Mune. Its features include a red headscarf and an apron with richly coloured lace decorations. The dress can be seen during performances by the Muna Zvončari.
The Muna Bell-Ringing Tradition During Carnival
The custom includes pairs ringing bells in unison and wearing distinctive headpieces. The village carnival tradition is also open to guests from outside the area during the carnival period. Performance dates and local routes are seasonal and may vary. So, check when the performances are scheduled before your trip.
