Mučići can be explored through two distinctive themes: the Zvončari carnival tradition and working with ceramics. The village is also part of the Matulji Bike & Hike network. These three perspectives lead to different travel choices: a visit timed around carnival customs, an interest in ceramic design, or the choice of a cycling and hiking route. The distinctions below will help you decide what to focus on during your stay.

Zvončari and Carnival: Local Customs

On the penultimate Sunday of Carnival, the procession of the Brgujski zvončari and maškare passes through Mučići; this is an established annual custom. The Mučićevi zvončari tradition also includes a procession on Carnival Sunday. Mučići is one of the Zvončari groups in Matulji whose hats are decorated with colourful crepe-paper flowers. The oldest documented photograph of the Brgujski zvončari was taken in Mučići in 1921.

Across the wider destination of Općina Matulji, Carnival in Matulji takes place in January and February; its central event is the Zvončari Festival. The Zvončari are traditional carnival figures whose origins date back more than 500 years. The Zvončari parade has been held in Matulji since 1995, featuring circle dances, movements, costumes and the groups’ entourages. This general period provides the seasonal timeframe; if you are travelling for a specific event, check its date.

Ceramics in Mučići

A second way to discover Mučići is through ceramics. At Mučići 46, the InterInova association works with traditional clay-firing techniques and contemporary ceramic design. The association holds exhibitions at the ISA exhibition space in Mučići. One historical example is the 2010 exhibition “Zvončari i keramika”: 19 artists and the Romolo Venucci ceramic group took part. The exhibition theme brings together Zvončari and ceramics; the association’s work combines traditional techniques with contemporary design. If you would like to visit an exhibition, check in advance whether it is currently open to visitors.

Cycling and Hiking Routes

For active days, the Matulji Bike & Hike network offers a different focus. It comprises 150 kilometres of cycling and hiking trails across ten circular routes, and Mučići is part of this network. The routes offer a choice between forests and picturesque settlements. The 150 kilometres refer to the entire network, not to a single loop. So check the specific route before adding it to your day’s plans.

Another route in Općina Matulji

As another nature outing in the wider destination of Općina Matulji, a hiking trail follows the scenic ridge of Crni vrh, a 1,037-metre-high peak in the protected Lisina landscape. The trail starts southwest of the mountain hut on Lisina. This specific ridge route differs from the choice of ten circular routes in the Matulji Bike & Hike network. As trail conditions can change, check them before setting out.
