Lovranska Draga lies on the eastern slopes of Učka, within Učka Nature Park. Terraced vineyards and meadows shape the landscape, with the highest peaks of the mountain range in the background. For a trip focused on nature and hiking, its location as a starting point is especially appealing: hiking trails lead from the settlement toward Medveja and the sea, as well as inland toward Učka. This brings different types of landscape into focus without requiring a single circular route.
Hiking and Landscape
The settlement lies on a steep mountain ridge about 360 metres above sea level and offers views across Kvarner Bay. Together with the vineyard terraces and meadows, it creates a landscape in which the ridge, the slopes and the higher peaks of Učka each play their own part. Those choosing where to stay primarily for access to hiking trails will find routes here both toward the coast and into the mountains. These directions are quite distinct: Medveja and the sea lie in one direction, while the inland route toward Učka lies in the other.
Traces of History
The area’s history can also be traced through specific places. Prehistoric human remains were found at Oporovina, in the Lovranska Draga area, in 1929. The site is described as the first prehistoric site in Kvarner. At the entrance to the settlement stands the small Baroque Church of St Michael, the patron saint of Lovranska Draga. The site and the church point to different historical connections: early traces of human presence on the one hand, and the religious tradition of the settlement on the other.
Agriculture and Local Cuisine
Cherries and sweet chestnuts are part of Lovranska Draga’s agricultural tradition. Another local speciality is repa i fažol, a dish of turnips and beans served for the feast of St Michael. The feast falls on 29 September. Together, the produce and the dish reveal a different side of the settlement from its hiking trails: the landscape is not only a backdrop for routes, but is also connected with cultivation and food culture.
