The Lungomare connects Lovran with other places on the Opatija Riviera and offers views of the sea and Art Nouveau villas. Trails and buildings around Lovran also tell of different aspects of the landscape and the town’s history.
Coast and trails inland
Medveja Beach is made up of white pebbles. It was shaped by a stream flowing down from the slopes of Učka, as well as by wind and waves. This explains why, alongside the forces of the sea, water from the mountain also helped shape the beach.
The old footpath leads from Medveja to Lovranska Draga and offers a different view of the hinterland. This scenic hike provides insights into the historic connection with the gardens and olive groves inland from the former fishing village. Along this same path, the landscape and the former relationship between the town and its hinterland are both in focus.
The Lungomare, by contrast, offers a coastal perspective: on the route between Lovran and other places on the Opatija Riviera, you can enjoy views of the sea and Art Nouveau villas. Access and local conditions may change; check them before setting out.
Trails on the slopes of Učka
The Chestnut Route climbs from Lovran towards Vojak and runs above Liganj on the slopes of Učka. If you are interested in the trail, this gives you a clear idea of its direction and location. As trail conditions may change, check them before your hike.
The Slap educational trail starts in Lovranska Draga and leads to a waterfall on Učka. Along the way, it passes through a sweet chestnut forest; information boards provide details about this endemic plant species. This focus on nature sets the trail apart from the Chestnut Route, which runs from Lovran towards Vojak.
Lovranska Draga lies within Učka Nature Park on a steep mountain ridge 360 metres above sea level. The village’s location and the surrounding trails offer different ways to explore mountain scenery and nature.
Traces of history in Lovran
Several eras are reflected in the old town’s buildings. The Church of St George was built in the 12th century in the Romanesque style; its sanctuary is decorated with 15th-century frescoes. The Church of St John the Baptist stands on the foundations of an earlier 12th-century religious building. Its interior frescoes depict scenes from the saint’s life.
The Church of the Holy Trinity is considered the oldest surviving monument in Lovran. The town tower is the only surviving remnant of the former fortification system, while Stubica is the only surviving original town gate. The gate once connected Lovran with its harbour. These buildings make the town’s history visible through surviving parts of its former fortifications.
The small harbour of Mandrać was the centre of the town’s economic activity. Villa Fernandea is part of the history of tourism: it was the first building on the Riviera constructed exclusively for tourism. The two places represent different aspects of the town’s history: the harbour as an economic centre and the villa as a building with a specific purpose related to tourism.
Exhibitions and practical information
The House of the Lovran Guc features permanent exhibitions of boat models from the northern Adriatic, as well as the “Quarneroli” exhibition. It tells the story of sailors from the northern Adriatic who took part in an expedition to the Arctic Circle. The top floor of the tower in the house is set up as a viewpoint and offers historical information about the old town and Lovran. Visiting and opening arrangements may change; check the current options before your visit.
