Above Lovran, terraced gardens grow cherries, grapevines and olives. Along the coast, the ten-kilometre-long Lungomare offers sea views and historic villa architecture.

Landscape and Lungomare

The Lungomare is a ten-kilometre-long coastal promenade. Sea views and historic villa architecture feature in descriptions of the promenade, offering a different perspective from the terraced gardens above the town. Together, these two themes show different sides of Lovran: the coast and the cultivation of cherries, grapevines and olives. When planning your stay, you can decide whether to focus on the promenade or the history of the town centre.

Old Town, Gates and Harbour

Lovran’s Old Town is a well-preserved historic centre that was once surrounded by walls and bastions. Its distinctive architectural features include the cortiles: small courtyards enclosed by stone walls, with central cisterns, considered jewels of medieval urban architecture. These courtyards add a different kind of urban space to the picture of the former fortifications.

Stubica City Gate is the only original city gate in Lovran to have survived, and it connects the town with its harbour. Mandrać, Lovran’s historic harbour, is linked to the Old Town through the gate. The small harbour was once the centre of the town’s economic activity. The Old Town, gate and harbour can therefore be viewed as interconnected parts of the town’s history, although they did not all serve the same purpose.

Churches and Architectural History

The Church of the Holy Trinity is Lovran’s oldest surviving monument. The Romanesque Church of St George was built in the 12th century; its sanctuary contains 15th-century frescoes. Another layer of history is represented by the Church of St John the Baptist in the Old Town: it was built in the 14th century on the foundations of an earlier place of worship dating to the 12th century. Frescoes inside depict scenes from the saint’s life.

Smaller works of art also contribute to the town’s architectural history. The relief of St George in Lovran is a wooden relief in a portal lunette, created by local masters in the early 19th century. The town tower, in turn, is the only surviving remnant of the former fortification system. Today, it serves as an exhibition space and offers views of the Old Town, the sea and the Kvarner Islands. As access to exhibitions may vary, check before your visit whether the exhibition is open to visitors.

Villa Fernandea, now Villa Belveder, is part of Lovran’s tourism history. It was the first building on the Riviera constructed exclusively for tourism, and opened as a guesthouse in 1873. This historic opening date tells the story of Lovran’s early tourism development, but makes no claim about current use or availability.

Marunada and Marroni

Every October, Lovran celebrates Marunada, a food festival in honour of Lovran’s marroni. The offerings include roasted marroni, desserts and other marroni dishes, as well as spirits and marroni beer. Individual foods and drinks may vary. If you would like to combine your stay with the festival, check the specific event dates in advance; October is the recurring time of year, not a fixed date.

In the wider destination of Općina Lovran

The surrounding area offers a different focus from the coastal promenade and the Old Town. Učka Nature Park lies inland from Lovran. In the wider destination of Općina Lovran, the Slap educational trail starts in Lovranska Draga and leads to a waterfall on Učka. The trail passes through a sweet chestnut forest; information boards provide insights into this endemic plant species. Alongside the town’s history, this offers a nature experience specifically associated with the area around Lovran.
