In Krk, early Christian architecture, Frankopan heritage and trails by the sea come together. The Cathedral of Krk was built in the 5th century as a three-aisled early Christian basilica on the remains of Roman baths. The cathedral treasury preserves a gilded Frankopan altarpiece from 1477—another glimpse into the city’s long history.

Culture and maritime history

The Frankopan Castle is also a defining testament to the past: it is the only surviving secular medieval monument in Krk. The Krk Interpretive Centre presents Frankopan heritage, replicas of medieval weapons and open-air archaeological monuments. In this way, buildings and collections are complemented by interpretation that makes history accessible through different objects and places.

At the Maritime Heritage Interpretive Centre in the old town, the island’s maritime tradition is presented interactively. This includes a sailing simulation. Its focus therefore differs from the cathedral’s architectural and collection history: here, the subject is the island’s relationship with the sea and an activity that explores this theme.

Hiking trails, beaches and Prniba

For a hike, there are two similarly long trails rated easy to choose from, among others. H134 Tajne napuštenog naselja is an 8.5-kilometre circular trail that starts at Krk’s Upper Town Gate and heads towards Lakmartin. H127 Šetnja zelenim poluotokom is an easy 8.1-kilometre hiking trail in Krk. H134 is therefore 400 metres longer and is explicitly designated as a circular trail. Check the current condition of the trails before setting out.

Near H134 are the scattered remains of the abandoned settlement of Lizer, which was depopulated in the 19th century. This adds a distinct historical dimension to the trail: alongside the hike, you can also encounter the history of a place that was once inhabited.

The beaches in Krk town have rocky or sandy seabeds. Facilities there include beach volleyball, playgrounds, and diving and sailing centres. Prniba offers a different landscape: Aleppo pine forest and access to small, secluded beaches and rocky shores. If you would rather spend your days walking and enjoying coastal scenery than exploring culture, you can take these differences into account when planning.

Olive oil and sweet specialities

At Kuća maslinovog ulja Nono, you can learn about olive oil production and taste olive oil. Local cuisine also offers a glimpse into traditions: Imbrijagon is a fragrant, dry biscuit traditionally made in Krk before holidays. The Krk Princess Cake, in turn, is linked to a local legend that associates it with the 15th-century wedding of Nikola Frankopan and Dorotea. The biscuit and cake thus represent different culinary stories—one about a recurring custom, the other about a traditional legend.

Getting there and planning your stay

Krk can be reached by road via the Krk Bridge, by regular bus services and by boat. Ferry routes include Cres–Valbiska and Lopar–Valbiska. The port of Krk can accommodate vessels up to 15 metres long. If you plan to take a ferry, check the timetable before departure.

When choosing accommodation in Krk, it helps to decide on the focus of your trip first: culture, hiking trails, the coast or regional specialities. The topics described offer different ways to shape your stay, without requiring you to fit them all into the same day’s itinerary. If you are considering Krk as a place to stay overnight, you can then search specifically for hotels in Krk and plan your stay around the experiences that matter most to you.
