Poljica combines two trails classified as easy with a karst landscape and distinctive architecture. The routes are similar in length and ascent, but differ in layout and thematic focus. There is also an MTB loop and ecclesiastical and ethnographic heritage with specific dates. This makes it possible to explore the area according to your interests, whether through nature trails, cycling, or architecture.

Hiking: Similar Length, Different Routes

H128 “In the shade of great oaks” is a 6.6-kilometer hiking trail with 140 meters of elevation gain. It starts and ends at the central parking lot in Poljica. H135 Put lokvi is 6.2 kilometers long, climbs 120 meters, and runs from Milohnići to Poljica. This trail is also classified as easy. The two routes are similar in length and ascent, but differ in layout: H128 returns to its starting point, while H135 runs between two places. If you prefer a loop with the same start and finish, H128 is the right choice.

H135 Put lokvi passes through predominantly wooded terrain and by karst ponds. Information boards explain the characteristics of these ponds, giving the trail an educational focus. This sets it apart from H128, whose name refers to the great oaks and whose route also leads to a specific tree.

An Ancient Oak and ÄŚavlena Bay

At Dolinji drmun puški, H128 passes an approximately 400-year-old oak. It is 20 meters tall, its crown measures 30 meters in diameter, and its trunk is more than five meters in circumference. These details make the oak a striking natural feature along the trail and give the English route name “In the shade of great oaks” a tangible reference.

H128 descends from Poljica to Čavlena Bay. Hikers can take a break there, and swimming is also possible in summer. Thus, in addition to returning to the central starting point, the route includes a descent to the bay. H135 has a different focus: its karst ponds and information boards shape the trail’s theme.

A Longer Option on Two Wheels

B-425 is a 20-kilometer MTB loop that passes through Poljica. It is rated as moderately difficult and runs over gravel, asphalt, and trails. So the activities differ not only by mode of transport: the two hiking trails, classified as easy and just over six kilometers long, contrast with a longer, moderately difficult loop. When comparing the options, you can consider the route layout as well as the length and difficulty level.

Church and Ethnographic Zone

The parish church of Saints Cosmas and Damian is a single-nave building with a cruciform floor plan, dating from the late 15th century. A Glagolitic date on the window frame gives the year 1497. The freestanding bell tower, built of cut stone, was completed in 1768 and features Baroque architectural elements. An inscription dates the tower to 1768 and names Dominik Regini as its builder. The church and bell tower in Poljica are listed in the Croatian Register of Cultural Goods under code Z-2722.

Poljica’s ethnographic zone is also designated as a protected cultural and historical ensemble from the 15th century; its code is RRI-0315-1972. It includes traditional residential and agricultural complexes, characterized by stone construction, exterior staircases, imposing chimneys, and indoor hearths. The local architecture also includes well-preserved stone houses and Renaissance buildings. Together with the church and its later-built bell tower, these structures offer different historical and architectural perspectives on Poljica.
