Two routes pass through Zupanje and offer different points of reference for planning: the “Putevima Dobrinjštine” walking loop can be assessed by its length and elevation gain, while the MTB Route 472 is defined by its surfaces and course. This lets you consider which type of route better suits your travel plans.

Walking Loop and Mountain Biking

The “Putevima Dobrinjštine” walking loop is 14.7 kilometres long and has 320 metres of elevation gain. It connects Šilo with Žestilac, Gostinjac, Sv. Vid Dobrinjski, Dobrinj, Gornja Hlapa and Zupanje. The loop passes through the gently rolling, green rural landscape in the northeast of Krk. Its length and ascent are useful figures when fitting the route into your day’s plans. Check the route details before setting out, as they may change if the route is modified by the trail authorities.

MTB Route 472 follows old macadam and off-road tracks that turn into single-track sections in places. On the return journey to Klimno, the route passes through Zupanje. Some sections are marked as the Camino Krk, a pilgrimage route around the island. The section in Zupanje offers views of the karst peaks in the Vinodol Valley. The surface, markings and views provide different points of reference for the MTB route than the figures used to describe the walking loop.

A gumno alongside the route adds a concrete detail of rural history to the trip: it is a circular, level platform enclosed by a low stone wall. In the past, grain was threshed there. Its shape and former use make the purpose of this structure clear.

A celebration in honour of Our Lady of Lourdes is associated with 10 May in Zupanje. If you would like to plan your trip around it, check in advance whether the celebration is taking place that year.

The parish church of St Stephen in Dobrinj is considered one of the oldest parish churches; a Glagolitic document mentions it as early as 1100. The church also houses a sacred art collection of liturgical objects, paintings and sculptures dating from the 14th to the 19th century. The Church of the Holy Trinity in Dobrinj displays exhibits from the Dobrinj area. It is also home to the Maskeron: an impressive sculpture of a man’s head, probably created in 1738 by a local folk artist.

Another work of art is found in the Church of St Clement in Klimno: a protected wooden Renaissance polyptych depicting the Virgin Mary, the Child and the Saints. Klimno also has a maritime side. There is a mooring for boats as well as boatbuilding and boat-repair workshops.

The Bay of St Peter in Soline is mentioned in Glagolitic documents from as early as 1379 and 1465. The medieval Church of St Philip and St James stands on a secluded small hill above Soline. Soline Bay is considered the only place on Krk with medicinal herbs. Meline Beach is known for its healing mud, which is said to relieve various forms of bone pain.
