The Municipality of Majur combines a specific focus on wool processing with historical traces in its buildings and local history. Woonko – Centar vune Majur is open to all visitors every weekday from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., with expert guidance; advance registration is required.
Wool crafts at Woonko
Workshops on wet and dry wool felting are held at Woonko – Centar vune Majur. The fact that both techniques are offered makes felting itself a specific focus of the centre. Younger visitors can also enjoy a sheep-themed video game. This brings hands-on craft activities and a playful approach to the theme of sheep together in one place.
Chapels, homesteads and the history of the fortress
The history of the buildings can be seen at specific locations and reflected in different dates. The traditional homestead at Gornja Meminska, number 2, is a registered immovable cultural property in the Municipality of Majur. In Svinica, number 94, a traditional wooden house in the municipality is listed in an official register from 2016 under reference number P-5353. These residential and homestead buildings add further aspects of the area’s architectural history to its religious and military-historical traces.
A chapel in Svinica was built in 1846, one in Mračaj in 1888; the Chapel of St. Michael dates from the 19th century. Svinica Fortress is also part of local history: a report by Ivan Lenković from 1563 mentions it, although it was demolished in 1560. The wooden castle of Mračaj belonged to Count Blagaj and was demolished and burned down in 1559. Each of these construction dates and events gives the historical traces its own timeframe.
Nature and the wider travel region
The Natura 2000 site HR2001342 Područje oko špilje Gradusa is located within the Municipality of Majur. It adds a nature-conservation dimension to the area’s architectural and local history.
The Municipality of Majur is part of the wider Banovina-Pounje travel region. The rivers Una and Sunja, springs and forests shape the landscape there. The hilly countryside of the wider region invites visitors to cycle, stroll and hike. This regional perspective extends beyond the individual cultural sites and the theme of wool.
Sisak-Moslavina County also offers a broader setting for cultural and landscape experiences. The Kupa, Sava and Odra rivers meet in Sisak; the Old Bridge is a prominent city landmark and an important part of its cultural heritage. Visitors to Sisak can also take a boat trip from the mouth of the Odra to where the Kupa flows into the Sava. Check the latest details before planning a trip. Sisak Fortress was completed in 1550, ten years before Svinica Fortress was demolished.
