Wool, architectural history and cycling offer different ways to enjoy a stay in Majur. A particular highlight is Woonko – Centar vune Majur; other points of interest include the old school building, the Chapel of St Michael and the local PPLP 01 cycling tourism route. You can choose how to experience the town based on your interests: as a destination for a prearranged educational visit, for cultural and historical discoveries or for a cycling tour. Woonko is located at Davorina Trstenjaka 29 in Majur.

Woonko: Educational Visits by Prior Arrangement

The centre welcomes visitors of all ages and is particularly geared towards children. Visits are available on weekdays by prior arrangement and with expert guidance. Confirm your appointment again before travelling. During an educational visit in October 2024, participants took part in a wet-felting workshop and made a chestnut-cone souvenir. The same programme included an interactive presentation of sheep shearing using VR headsets and a sheep-themed game. If you are travelling specifically to take part in a particular workshop activity, check its availability in advance.

A Cycling Route Through Lowlands and Hills

The local PPLP 01 is a 23.7-kilometre cycling tourism route that passes through Majur. It runs through flat lowlands and also includes some more challenging climbs. The landscape features settlements, cultural landscapes associated with the Sava and Una rivers, and the forests of Banovina and Pounje. Signage and route conditions can change, so check both before setting out. When choosing a ride, it is worth considering the 23.7 kilometres alongside the terrain: the route is not flat throughout. This gives you a more nuanced picture than the distance alone.

Architectural History and Local Memory

The old school building in Majur was built in the late 19th century on a plot associated with the headquarters of an 18th-century military company. The building has atmospheric and cultural-historical value. The Chapel of St Michael was built in 1862 and is an example of the late Baroque classicism of the Military Frontier. The two buildings offer different points of connection with local history: the school building’s context is shaped by the plot’s earlier association, while the chapel’s construction date and architectural character are particularly tangible.

In the early 16th century, in response to Ottoman attacks across the Una, Majur became a defensive border area. A later connection to wool is the vune festival: its first edition took place on 15 April 2023, International Wool Day.

Getting There by Train

Majur has a railway station on regional line R102. The line runs between Sunja, Volinja and the state border towards Dobrljin. Check the current timetable for your travel date before planning a connection.
