Church and Architectural History

The Parish Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary of the Seven Sorrows is a notable testament to the architectural history of Veliko Trgovišće. It was built from 1838 to 1876 and is a single-nave building with neoclassical features. Inside, the church is decorated with scenes from the life of Christ. The term “single-nave” describes a layout with one main nave; together with its neoclassical features, this helps identify the church by its basic form and style. The scenes from the life of Christ create a distinct religious accent inside.

Landscape and Orientation

The Municipality of Veliko Trgovišće extends west from the right bank of the Krapina. Important state roads run through the Krapina Valley; the Ž-2196, formerly known as the Zagorska magistrala, also follows the valley. The Zagreb–Macelj motorway (E-59), part of the international Pyhrn Corridor, runs east of the municipality. The riverbank, valley axis and motorway give you different reference points for navigating the map. Check the specific road conditions before setting out.

Franjo Tuđman: Birthplace, School and Cultural Centre

The restored birthplace of Franjo Tuđman, which is open to visitors, stands at the entrance to Veliko Trgovišće. Visiting hours are Tuesday to Saturday from 12:00 to 16:00 and Sunday from 12:30 to 17:00; check these times before your arrival. The Spomen škola “dr. Franjo Tuđman” houses a museum, a library and a reading room. The dr. Franjo Tuđman Cultural Centre opened in May 2024 and hosts numerous music, film, literature and gallery programmes. The municipality thus offers several cultural connections to the name Franjo Tuđman: a restored birthplace, a school with a museum and library, and a cultural centre with several programme strands.

Archaeology and Local Highlights

The wider area of Veliko Trgovišće contains a prehistoric necropolis with earthen burial mounds measuring 30 to 60 metres in diameter and 6 to 12 metres in height. It is one of the largest sites of this kind discovered so far in northern Croatia. The burial mounds have not yet been investigated. The Jezero fishpond is managed by the Jezero Sport Fishing Association of Veliko Trgovišće.

Wine Culture and Cycling

The Zagorska Wine Road passes through the Municipality of Veliko Trgovišće. Grape and wine festivals are traditionally held here several times a year, and visitors are welcome. If you are planning to attend a festival, check the date in advance. The Škalec rural tourism business offers Welsh Riesling, Rhine Riesling, Sauvignon and mixed white wine for tasting; the specific selection may vary.

The “Toma Gajdek” route is an easy circular ride through Veliko Trgovišće and its surroundings. Check the route conditions before cycling. In the wider destination of Krapinsko-Zagorska, the “Around Lobor and the Western Ivanščica” route is classified as a moderately difficult cycling tour; it connects nature and archaeology. The stated difficulty levels give you a specific comparison between the easy circular route and the moderately difficult regional route.

Krapinsko-Zagorska in a Broader Context

In the wider destination of Krapinsko-Zagorska, distinct cultural themes add to the picture of the region. The Krapina Neanderthal Museum presents its permanent exhibition across 18 thematic areas. The Staro Selo Kumrovec Open-Air Museum conveys the authentic appearance of a Zagorje village from the beginning of the 20th century and includes around 40 restored buildings of traditional architecture. These examples offer a different cultural perspective from the architectural history and Tuđman connections in Veliko Trgovišće.
