The Municipality of Krapinske Toplice grew up around a thermal spring. At Aquae Vivae, thermal water becomes an experience: the water park covers more than 18,000 m² and includes five indoor pools and one outdoor pool. All pools are filled with natural, healing thermomineral spring water.
The complex has more than 160 water attractions. These include waterfalls and geysers, as well as underwater side massages and massage loungers. The 4.5 m-deep diving pool offers a different experience, with professional equipment and diving instructors. Sauna visits and wellness are also among the municipality’s health-related offerings. Thus, different aspects of the thermal and wellness experience can be enjoyed within the town.
Spa Park and Routes
The spa park was established in 1861 alongside the spa. It has changed over time and today has the character of a square in front of the old spa building. Another historical connection is the road between the spa and the former Bellevue restaurant: both sides were lined with a horse chestnut avenue.
The Toplički pješački prsten comprises medical, recreational, and fitness trail groups. Professional supervision is provided for medical use. State Road D507 connects the entire municipality to the Zagreb–Maribor motorway via the route Valentinovo (D206) – Krapinske Toplice – Gubaševo (D205). This helps put the municipality and its road connection into context without conflating the different route groups.
Chapels and Traces of Different Eras
The Chapel of Saint Mary Magdalene stands on Zašat Hill, east of the centre. It was built in 1874 on the site of an older wooden chapel. Archaeological investigations in the surrounding area uncovered finds indicating a prehistoric hilltop settlement. The dating is provisional: the settlement is assigned to the Late Bronze Age, from 1200 to 800 BC. Different historical layers therefore coexist at this site—from prehistoric settlement to the 19th-century construction of the chapel.
The Chapel of Saint Anthony stands on a hill in Hršak Breg. Built in 1899, it is 2 km from Krapinske Toplice. The Chapel of Saint Nicholas is also octagonal: Zagreb lawyer Nikola Valičić had it built in the first half of the 19th century, and a new owner extensively restored it in 2007. The organ in the Parish Church of the Holy Trinity was built in 1860 by Leonard Ebner of Maribor.
Festivals, Culture, and Other Experiences
BadlFest is a traditional festival in Krapinske Toplice with regional and national significance. It takes place every year, and an edition for 2026 has also been confirmed. Another date in recent cultural history is mid-2022, when Kino Toplice reopened after more than 20 years.
Other experiences in the town include horse riding at the Horses for Champions centre and a flight simulator experience at the Heli Center. The Petrač winery and its vineyards are located on Hršak Breg, near Krapinske Toplice. These themes add distinct opportunities for culture, activity, and winemaking to the thermal offerings, without needing to form a single, unified itinerary.
For visitors exploring the wider destination, the Srce Zagorja tourist board is based in Krapinske Toplice and serves as a point of contact. This helps visitors situate the town’s offerings within the wider destination and choose their own focus for their stay.
