The Gupčeva Linden Tree in Gornja Stubica is more than 400 years old, 9 metres tall and has a trunk circumference of 4.70 metres. It has been protected as a natural monument since 1957. The Slani potok educational trail, established jointly with the Municipality of Gornja Stubica, also begins at the tree.

Castle, Church and Memorial Sites

The Museum of Peasant Revolts is housed in the 18th-century Baroque castle of the Oršić family. Its permanent exhibition includes a section on the development of feudalism in Hrvatsko Zagorje. One part of the exhibition thus explores the region’s history, while St George’s Parish Church, with its furnishings, offers another perspective on Gornja Stubica’s cultural heritage: it is a protected cultural property and has three Baroque altars and a pulpit.

Beside Oršić Castle stands a 6.5-metre-high statue of Matija Gubec. Its two symmetrical wings are each 20 metres long and 7.5 metres high; their surfaces are filled with bronze reliefs depicting more than 300 figures. Rudolf Perešin Memorial Park features a statue of a pilot and a preserved MiG-21. The museum, church, statue and memorial park each offer a distinct focus—from exhibitions and architecture to commemorating people and events.

Educational Trail and Routes Through Gupčev kraj

The Slani potok educational trail takes you on a walk of about two hours to a medieval salt mine. Information boards are placed along the route. While the walk is described as taking approximately two hours, Hiking Trail 34 provides specific details on length and difficulty: it runs from Gornja Stubica through Slani Potok to the Ročićeva sjenokoša trail junction, is 7.6 kilometres long and is rated moderate, with a difficulty level of 3 out of 5. Route conditions and markings may change; check them before setting out.

A walking and cycling route through Gupčev kraj runs in the Gornja Stubica area from Samci through Orehova Gorica and Pasanska Gorica to Banščica. The named stops give you an idea of the route, but no walking or cycling time is specified. There is also a fitness park at the NK Matija Gubec sports centre in Gornja Stubica.

Gornja Stubica lies on the northern slopes of Medvednica Nature Park. Together with the Gupčeva Linden Tree and the trails, this location offers another way to include nature and culture in your travel plans.

Festivals Throughout the Year

The traditional Jurjevo is a multi-day celebration held annually around 23 April in Gornja Stubica. The programme includes exhibitions, folklore performances—including children’s folklore—concerts, church services and the lighting of a bonfire. The aviation event Susreti za Rudija is also held annually in honour of Rudolf Perešin. The Viteški turnir is held once a year in the Oršić Castle complex.

The Gupčeva Kestenijada is an autumn event held by the Gupčeva Linden Tree. At its 16th edition in 2025, visitors were offered roasted chestnuts, mushroom goulash, chestnut desserts and a tasting of young wine. The festivals have different focuses: Jurjevo combines folklore, concerts and church services, while the 2025 edition of the Kestenijada also highlighted regional food and drinks. If you would like to plan your trip around a festival, check the latest dates and programme details.
