Nova Kapela Municipality can be explored through very different traces of culture: the Church of St. Luke in Srednji Lipovac dates from 1275 and is considered the municipality’s oldest original cultural asset. The archaeological site of Ravnjaš in Nova Kapela offers another perspective. Archaeological investigations identified a larger site there dating from the Sopot culture. Ravnjaš is classified as an immovable cultural asset under designation Z-3877. Together, these offer two different perspectives on the past: a dated church building and an archaeological site with an official classification.

Churches and Places of Remembrance

Nova Kapela itself also has sacred buildings with different associations. The Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary was built in the 18th century. The All Saints’ Cemetery Chapel is the mausoleum of Aleksandar Seitz. One can be placed in context by its period of construction, the other by its function as a mausoleum. If you are interested in cultural history, this comparison shows how a church building and a cemetery chapel with a commemorative function differ from one another.

The Trail and the Eco-Ethno Village in Stara Kapela

The trail in Stara Kapela offers a nature-focused perspective. It has six rest areas with sturdy oak tables and benches. Around 120 plant species are identified along the trail in Croatian and Latin. At some rest areas, information boards show pictures and names of the birds and wild animals found there. The trail also provides information about local edible and inedible mushrooms. You can encounter the nature-related themes in different ways: plants are named in two languages, while boards at the rest areas cover birds and wild animals, and information about mushrooms distinguishes between edible and inedible species.

The Eco-Ethno Village in Stara Kapela includes a weaving museum; a weaving workshop has also been established there. There is a stocked fishpond for anglers. In addition, there are two traditional restaurants. Before your trip, check how the museum is currently presented, whether the fishpond can be used, and whether the restaurants are open.

Railway Lines and Getting Around

Railway infrastructure also shapes how the area is laid out. The electrified, double-track MG-2C Zagreb–Tovarnik main railway line runs for 7.00 kilometres through Nova Kapela Municipality. The Zagreb–Slavonski Brod main railway line runs about one kilometre north of the Zagreb–Slavonski Brod motorway; in Nova Kapela, the line to Pleternica branches off from it.

Folk Dance and Singing

The 28th traditional church folk dance and singing showcase “Od sva se četiri vjetra!” was held in Srednji Lipovac as part of Brodsko kolo. Dance and singing are at its heart. If you would like to attend a future edition, check the latest event dates.
