Two natural pools fed by the La Pedregalosa River are located in Santa Rita de Río Cuarto. Hotel del Bosque offers visitors hiking areas and an organic farm; a tour description mentions stand-up paddleboarding on Laguna de Río Cuarto in the surrounding area. The distance from the hotel to the lagoon is stated as about 20 minutes. This places the natural feature, hotel amenities, and water activity in clearly identified locations.
Alajuela: More Nature and Culture
The wider destination of Alajuela offers volcanic landscapes and wetlands as distinct natural attractions. Parque Nacional Volcán Poás reaches 2,708 meters above sea level. Its summit has two craters; the main crater is 1.5 kilometers wide and 300 meters deep. There is also Laguna Botos, which is fed exclusively by rainwater. A different natural environment can be found at Refugio Nacional de Vida Silvestre Mixto Caño Negro, a Ramsar site of global importance for wetland conservation. Its system of lagoons and canals can be explored by boat and canoe. The wetland habitat is home to jabirus, caimans, and turtles, among other species.
The wetlands of Bosque Alegre are also part of Alajuela’s regional natural attractions. Laguna Hule is the largest of the three wetlands and has a viewpoint. The lagoon is 1,150 meters wide and more than 26 meters deep. Fishing, kayaking, camping, hiking, and swimming are possible in the wetlands, subject to local conditions and management rules. The trailhead is accessible by car or four-wheel-drive vehicle: take Route 126 to Cariblanco, then continue 7.5 kilometers toward Los Ángeles Sur. Road conditions can vary, particularly in wet weather.
