At Refugio Nacional de Vida Silvestre Mixto Caño Negro, you can explore lagoons and canals by boat and canoe. Alajuela also offers different sides of a trip, from volcanic landscapes and wetlands to places known for handicrafts. Choose what to discover based on your interests, from the wildlife of a protected area to architecture and hand-painted wood art.
Wetlands and Wildlife
Caño Negro is a Ramsar site of global importance for wetland conservation. Its habitat is home to jabirus, caimans and turtles, among other species. The waterways offer a way to explore the lagoon and canal system; the species mentioned also give an impression of the wetland’s ecological importance.
Bosque Alegre also invites you to experience the landscape and nature from different perspectives. Armadillos, white-faced capuchins and howler monkeys live in the surrounding wetlands, which are also home to 170 bird species. Possible activities include fishing, kayaking, camping, hiking and swimming. Which activities are available on site may depend on local conditions and management rules.
Laguna Hule is the largest of the three wetlands of Bosque Alegre. It is 1,150 meters wide and more than 26 meters deep; a lookout also offers views of the landscape. To reach the starting point of the trail to the wetlands, you can drive there by car or four-wheel-drive vehicle: take Route 126 to Cariblanco, then continue 7.5 kilometers toward Los Ángeles Sur. Road conditions may vary, especially in wet weather.
Volcanic Landscapes and Trails
Poás Volcano rises 2,708 meters above sea level. Its summit has two craters, including the main crater, which is 1.5 kilometers wide and 300 meters deep. Laguna Botos is also located there and is fed exclusively by rainwater. The main crater’s dimensions and the source of the lagoon’s water illustrate two distinct features of this volcanic landscape.
In Parque Nacional Volcán Arenal, the Heliconias, Coladas, Tucanes and Los Miradores trails offer opportunities to observe much of the park’s flora and fauna, as well as remnants of lava flows. Visitor facilities include information, a ranger station, trails, communication facilities, restrooms and drinking water. Services may change seasonally or because of safety restrictions, so check current conditions and trail status before setting out.
Parque Nacional Volcán Tenorio and its protected zone cover 18,402.27 hectares. They extend across the Alajuela cantons of Upala and Guatuso, as well as Cañas and Tilarán in Guanacaste. In the park, the three-kilometer linear nature trail Misterios del Tenorio passes a waterfall cascade, a lookout, the blue lagoon, bubbling springs and the Teñidero. The route links several named natural features within the park.
Museums, Architecture and Handicrafts
In Alajuela, Museo Histórico Cultural Juan Santamaría occupies the city’s former barracks and former prison; both buildings are considered heritage sites of interest. The museum has permanent and temporary exhibitions, and its program may change. Its weapons collection includes firearms, bladed weapons, ammunition and accessories, mostly from the second half of the 19th century. Which objects are on display may vary depending on the exhibition. The museum also provides information about reserving exhibition spaces, guided tours and halls. Check these arrangements directly with the museum before your visit.
Museo Regional de San Ramón is located in the former town hall, built in 1878 and declared architectural and cultural heritage in 1982. The museum’s rooms include spaces for temporary exhibitions, children’s and young adult literature, regional literature and identities, and natural history. The range of themes offers a chance to combine a museum visit focused on regional culture with one focused on natural history.
Sarchí is considered the cradle of Costa Rican handicrafts and a destination where visitors can see traditional crafts. A monumental ox cart there is four meters tall and six meters long, and decorated in bright colors. A historic hand-painted church with wooden details also stands in the central park. In Grecia, the Templo Metálico Las Mercedes, built in 1897, is another architectural landmark: it is considered a jewel of architecture and symbolizes a period of great prosperity as well as the iron architecture of the beginning of Tomás Guardia’s liberal regime.
