The Tianjin Museum’s three permanent core exhibitions span a broad sweep of history, covering Tianjin from the end of the Paleolithic period to the mid-to-late Qing dynasty (1636–1912). The museum brings together collections, preservation, research, exhibitions and education. It is an important public cultural institution and a window for international cultural exchange in Tianjin.

Memorial Sites and Cultural Traditions

The Zhou Enlai and Deng Yingchao Memorial Hall is located in Tianjin Water Park Scenic Area and covers 70,000 square meters. Its exhibitions explore Zhou Enlai’s life, as well as Deng Yingchao and the women’s movement in 20th-century China. They also include a 1:1 reconstruction of the West Flower Hall and an Ilyushin Il-14 aircraft, number 678. The memorial hall is a national patriotic education base, a national integrity education base and a national first-class museum.

Another facet of Tianjin’s history is represented by the Guangdong Guild Hall: in 1985, it became China’s first specialized museum devoted primarily to opera. Yangliuqing New Year woodblock prints and clay figurines by Niren Zhang are among Tianjin’s best-known intangible cultural heritage traditions. Together, these examples represent different ways of engaging with Tianjin’s culture: institutional commemoration, performing arts and traditional art forms.

Architecture with a European Theme

Tianjin’s Italian Style Area puts European elements at its center. Its heritage includes more than 30 former residences of historical figures. At the same time, the area is developing into a comprehensive international district for tourism, business, leisure, entertainment and culture. Its description thus brings architectural heritage together with a broader tourism, business and cultural focus.

The Sea, Nature and Science

The National Maritime Museum of China has a 23,000-square-meter exhibition hall devoted to marine ecology and the environment, science education, interactive programs, and Chinese maritime culture and history. The Tianjin Natural History Museum combines a collection of 400,000 biological specimens with opportunities for nature exploration, hands-on science experiences and education. The two institutions therefore have different areas of focus: maritime culture and the marine environment at one, biological collections and nature exploration at the other.

The Tianjin Science and Technology Museum has five exhibition areas with more than 300 exhibits or exhibit groups, as well as a Universal Theatre for science films and astronomy programs. It also offers themed exhibitions, lectures, performances and astronomy training. If you plan to attend a particular lecture, performance or astronomy program, check the current schedule in advance.

The Coastal Landscape of Dongjiang Bay

Dongjiang Bay Beach Scenic Area is China’s largest artificial beach. It is located on the Bohai Sea in Tianjin, in the southeastern leisure and holiday area of the Dongjiang Comprehensive Bonded Zone. The beach is about 2 kilometers long, and the breakwater that borders it measures about 3 kilometers. The sea area covers about 2 square kilometers. The coastal description thus includes more than just the beach: it also gives the length of the breakwater and the extent of the sea area.
