Bogda reveals a striking contrast: the Bogda component of Xinjiang Tianshan represents the mountain ecosystems of the eastern Tianshan as a “moist island” in an extremely arid continental environment. Xinjiang Tianshan is a serial World Heritage site comprising four components and covering a total area of 606,833 hectares. The Bogda component lies in eastern Xinjiang, at the northern foot of Bogda Peak. Xinjiang Tianshan provides a habitat for relict species as well as numerous rare, endangered and endemic species; snow leopards, Tianshan red deer and snow lotus plants live in the Bogda area.

Mountains, grasslands and desert

Xinjiang’s landscape has more to offer than the Tianshan. Kanas Scenic Area lies in the central part of the Altai Mountains in Xinjiang, in a border region adjoining Kazakhstan, Russia and Mongolia. Kalajun Grassland, in Tekes County, is a typical natural alpine grassland with flower-filled mountain meadows. Kumtag Desert Scenic Area offers a different landscape: the desert lies close to an oasis and is known as a “desert in the city.” Regional descriptions thus present both alpine grasslands and a desert on the edge of an oasis—two distinctly different highlights for a trip focused on nature and scenery.

Cultural history and living traditions

The Kizil Caves are located on Mingwuyitake Mountain in Kizil Township, Baicheng County. They were first carved into the rock in the 3rd century and hold an important place in the history of Buddhism in East Asia. Jiaohe Ancient City represents a different historical context: the city stood along an important Silk Road route, where different cultures came into contact and exchanged ideas. Buddhist history is central to the Kizil Caves, while Jiaohe tells a story of cultural exchange along a trade route.

Karez also offers insight into cultural history through its function. This ancient water system in Xinjiang’s arid regions channels groundwater using the natural gradient and without mechanical power. This technical subject complements the caves and historic sites: the focus here is on a system that uses natural conditions to drain water.

Xinjiang Uyghur Muqam is a musical tradition widespread among Uyghur communities, with four main regional forms: Twelve Muqam, Dolan Muqam, Turpan Muqam and Hami Muqam. Performances combine singing and dancing with folk and classical music. They also feature varied choreography, different musical styles and a wide range of instruments. Muqam can therefore be understood not only through its regional forms, but also through the interplay of music, movement and song.

Tuyugou Scenic Area comprises Tuyugou Village, Tuyugou Grand Canyon, Tuyugou Thousand Buddha Caves and Tuyugou Cultural Tourism Town. Its named components show how a scenic area can bring together a village, canyon, caves and a cultural tourism town.

Travel themes from road trips to winter sports

Xinjiang’s official self-drive tourism routes include the Duku Highway Scenic Route and a World Heritage Route. Their names point to different travel interests: road trips and World Heritage. For winter sports, a 2024 regional survey lists 101 ski areas and five state-recognized ski tourism resorts in Xinjiang. Both figures are among the highest nationwide and are regarded as leading figures in China. Winter sports are therefore another possible focus alongside scenery and culture.

When looking for a hotel for a trip to Xinjiang, you can first decide which of these themes interests you most: nature, cultural heritage, a road trip or winter sports.
