The area around Linyi offers cultural attractions ranging from calligraphy and historic gardens to archaeological discoveries. Each site has its own focus: Wang Xizhi’s former residence combines garden and architectural art with the history of calligraphy, while the Yinqueshan Han Tomb Bamboo Slips Museum explores tombs, bamboo texts, and military history. A cultural museum and a temple are also among the historic sites in the area.

Wang Xizhi’s Residence and the History of Calligraphy

Wang Xizhi’s former residence is a classical garden and building complex, a cultural heritage site of Shandong Province, and a national 3A-rated tourist attraction. Its four themed areas are named Yanchi Huaigu, Qushui Liushang, Xiyang Puzhao, and Qianqiu Wuxian. The grounds include exhibition halls for Wang Xizhi and Wang Xianzhi, the Hall of the Shrine of the Five Worthies, and the Goose Pond. Alongside its gardens and architecture, the site also has a connection to the history of calligraphy.

The stone inscriptions and works mentioned here include the Jiliu Stele, the imperial stele at the Shrine of the Five Worthies of Langya, the Orchid Pavilion painting, “Seventeen帖,” and “Langya帖.” The grounds also contain the Xiyanchi Jin Dynasty tombs, designated a national key cultural relic protection unit in 2006. In the surrounding area, calligraphy, architecture, and archaeological heritage can thus be found side by side, though they do not share the same historical focus.

The nighttime performance “Meng Hui Xizhi” also draws on Wang Xizhi’s life as a calligrapher and depicts the elegance of the Wei-Jin period. A description published in May 2026 mentions regular performances featuring a live stage, lighting effects, and dramatic scenes. This information records the state of the performances as described at that time.

Han Tombs and Bamboo Texts

The Yinqueshan Han Tomb Bamboo Slips Museum is China’s first archaeological site museum devoted to Han tombs and bamboo slips. Its main exhibition comprises seven galleries focusing on Han tombs, bamboo slips, and military texts. More than 7,500 bamboo slips were unearthed from the two Yinqueshan Han tombs. These finds offer a distinct perspective on the history of texts handed down on bamboo and wooden tablets.

The exhibitions cover the Yinqueshan Han tombs and archaeological finds, the culture of bamboo and wooden tablets, and traditional Chinese military culture. Editions of “The Art of War” and “Sun Bin’s Art of War” are on display; the main building has separate exhibitions dedicated to them. The Han Tomb Hall features reconstructions of Western Han tombs No. 1 and No. 2. VR technology digitally presents exhibition scenes and the objects on display. The specific exhibition design and digital presentation may continue to evolve.

More Historical and Cultural Sites

The Linyi Museum is classified as a national first-class museum. A 2026 description mentions four exhibition floors, a comprehensive thematic exhibition on history, seven special exhibitions, and several rotating temporary exhibitions. This combination distinguishes the comprehensive historical exhibition from the changing themes. The Linyi Confucius Temple also has several designated historical distinctions: the Shandong Provincial Government declared it a provincial cultural heritage site in 1992, and in 2021 it was added to Shandong’s list of historic buildings.

A route described in 2024 and recognized as a Shandong Province cultural route is titled “Visit the Home of the Sage of Calligraphy and Experience the Old Langya Charm.” Its stops at the time included Wang Xizhi’s former residence, a Langya paper-cutting experience at Miguang Culture in the Small Commodity City, and the purchase of paper-art products. Also mentioned were the wood culture exhibition and a rubbing-technique experience at the Tianze Museum of Wood Culture, as well as the nighttime streetscape of Yizhouli, with its cultural heritage products shop and Qianhe Guozipu cultural heritage workshop. The route description also included a visit to the Wang Family Exhibition Hall for ripe pears and a tasting of the Wang family’s ripe pears.

The Tianze Museum of Wood Culture displays rare wood species and artworks made from aged wood. Its described offerings also include intangible cultural heritage exhibitions, educational and science programs, and leisure and tourism. Another scenic highlight is Linyi Riverside Ecological Park, described as having nine squares and 18 themed areas; it is one of China’s first 18 water landscape areas.
