The Temple of Confucius in Qufu City was built in 478 BC to honor Confucius and offer sacrifices to him. Mount Taishan, in turn, rises 1,545 meters above the surrounding plateau. These two sites reveal different sides of Shandong: Confucian heritage with ancient buildings and inscriptions, and a distinctive mountain landscape with its own geological heritage.

Confucius in Qufu: Temple and Cemetery

The Temple of Confucius comprises 104 buildings, more than 1,250 ancient trees and over 1,000 stone steles. These numbers offer several ways to view the temple: architecture, mature trees and stone records all come together at this memorial site. Visitors interested in the history of Confucius can pair the temple with another site in Qufu, while bearing in mind that the two are different kinds of attractions.

The Cemetery of Confucius lies north of Qufu. The grounds cover 183 hectares and contain the tomb of Confucius as well as more than 100,000 graves of his descendants. Unlike the temple, the focus here is on the burial ground. The two sites can therefore be seen as different ways of encountering Confucian heritage: one is a temple complex for remembrance and offerings, the other an expansive cemetery.

Mount Taishan: Elevation and Geological Heritage

Mount Taishan covers 25,000 hectares and rises 1,545 meters above the surrounding plateau. The mountain is also described in terms of its 22 temples and approximately 1,800 stone tablets and inscriptions. Nature and historical records are not interchangeable themes here: the elevation describes the landscape, while the temples and inscriptions offer a distinct cultural perspective on the mountain.

The Taishan UNESCO Global Geopark consists of eight areas of exceptional scenic beauty. Its rich geological heritage makes it a natural geological museum. For your selection, this means Taishan can be explored both through the mountain’s dimensions and through its geological and cultural features. These perspectives complement one another without either replacing the other.
