At Shahu, 22.52 square kilometers of desert lie directly beside 45 square kilometers of water. This striking contrast offers a special way to experience Ningxia: here, the landscape can be seen not just as a vast expanse, but as a juxtaposition of distinctly different elements. There is also abundant birdlife, cultural sites, and a large forest reserve—topics that can be weighted very differently depending on your interests.
Desert, Water, and Birdlife at Shahu
Shahu brings two landscapes together in a compact area: the desert and the water border each other directly. The birdlife is also noteworthy for nature enthusiasts. An official tourism description from 2023 mentions more than 200 bird species and over 1.5 million birds; the figures may vary by season. They should therefore be treated as seasonal guidance, not as a constant snapshot.
Activities offered at Shahu include cycling along the Rainbow Trail, camel rides to the dunes, sandboarding, off-road drives through the desert, and rides on drift boats. A 2023 tourism description lists these options; individual offerings may change. If you have a particular activity in mind, check in advance whether it will be available during your visit. The various options offer different experiences: some take you through the landscape by bicycle or camel, while others combine sand, terrain, or water with a fast-paced ride.
A different scale of landscape awaits you in southern Ningxia at Liupan Mountain National Forest Park. The protected area extends across Jingyuan, Longde, and Yuanzhou and covers 67,800 hectares. Unlike Shahu, whose distinctive character lies in the direct contrast between desert and water, the park’s setting is shaped by its expanse across three administrative areas. When planning your trip, you can decide whether you are more interested in a striking juxtaposition of landscapes or a large forest reserve.
Xixia History and Cultural Perspectives
The Xixia Imperial Tombs comprise nine imperial mausoleums, 271 subordinate tombs, a northern architectural complex, and 32 flood-control structures. These components show the complex layout of the necropolis: its scope includes not only tombs, but also architecture and protective structures. At the same time, the imperial tombs reflect a multicultural Silk Road civilization shaped by Chinese imperial traditions and placing Buddhism at its center. Questions of rule, cultural exchange, and religion thus come together at one site.
The Sumeru Museum offers another perspective on this world: it is China’s first specialized museum dedicated to the Silk Road and Buddhist cave art. The Ningxia Museum, by contrast, focuses on a broader view of the region’s history and culture. It collects, researches, preserves, exhibits, and interprets historical, Hui Chinese, and modern artifacts from Ningxia. Its major permanent exhibitions include topics such as Ningxia’s historical relics, Xixia art objects, Hui Chinese folk culture, rock art of the Helan Mountains, and revolutionary relics. The exhibition program may change.
The two museums therefore offer different emphases: the Sumeru Museum brings together the Silk Road and Buddhist cave art as a specialized subject, while the Ningxia Museum covers various aspects of regional history and culture. If you want to focus your trip mainly on culture, this contrast can help guide your choice of interests, without suggesting that both museums cover the same topics.
Winegrowing as Another Perspective
Hedong Manor adds winegrowing to the cultural and landscape themes. The estate includes a vineyard, a cultural wine cellar, and an exhibition garden with old vines. Bringing together the vineyard, cellar, and garden offers a look at different aspects of winegrowing. Since facilities may be renovated over time, it is advisable to check the latest information before visiting.
The places described here appeal to different interests: Shahu combines desert and water and offers birdlife shaped by the seasons; the Xixia Imperial Tombs and museums offer cultural perspectives; Liupan Mountain National Forest Park provides a sweeping landscape; and Hedong Manor adds winegrowing to the picture. This makes it possible to choose places in Ningxia according to the topics that interest you most, rather than reducing the region to just one kind of experience.
