Museums: Bamboo Slips, Archaeology and Earth History
As China’s first modern museum of its kind, the Changsha Jiandu Museum brings together the collection, preservation, organization, research and exhibition of bamboo slips. Its holdings include bamboo slips from the State of Wu during the Three Kingdoms period and from the Western Han dynasty. The pieces were excavated in Zoumalou in 1996 and 2003, respectively. The Hunan Museum offers a different perspective on Changsha’s history: its major holdings include artifacts from the Han tombs of Mawangdui. The museum features five permanent exhibitions as well as temporary exhibitions, with the Mawangdui exhibition as its main focus. The Changsha Museum covers a broader period. It houses more than 60,000 artifacts or artifact sets dating from the Paleolithic era to the modern and contemporary periods. By comparison, the Changsha Jiandu Museum and the Hunan Museum have clearly recognizable focuses on bamboo slips and Mawangdui, respectively, while the Changsha Museum spans a wider period in its collection. The Hunan Museum of Geology offers a natural science perspective. An official Hunan tourism guide from 2025 describes it as the largest free natural science museum in Hunan and gives its exhibition area as 8,000 square meters. Its six main exhibition halls focus on the mysteries of the Earth, geology and mineral resources, natural ecology, the evolution of life, minerals and gemstones, and surveying and geographic information. This gives it a thematic contrast with the historical and archaeological collections of the other museums.
Yuelu Mountain: Landscapes and Historic Culture
Yuelu Mountain lies west of Changsha. The Yuelu Mountain Scenic Area is classified as an urban mountain scenic area and combines mountain, water, island and city landscapes with strong historical and cultural significance. Yuelu Academy, one of China’s four major historic academies, is located within the scenic area. Aiwanting Pavilion is named as one of the main visitor highlights of Yuelu Mountain. The mountain is also recommended for viewing red maple leaves in autumn, making the season another factor to consider when choosing when to visit.
