The wider Yueyang area brings together a remarkable architectural history and the landscape of Dongting Lake. Yueyang Tower and Sanzui Pavilion represent cultural heritage, while Junshan Island and the East Dongting Lake Nature Reserve are notable for their scenery. When planning your trip, you can deliberately balance architecture, exhibitions, and nature-related activities.

Architectural history around Yueyang

Yueyang, also known in ancient times as Baling and Yuezhou, is regarded as a renowned cultural city with a history of more than 2,500 years. Yueyang Tower brings architectural history to life through its precise dimensions and construction details: it is 19.42 meters high and 17.24 meters wide, with a floor area of 250.66 square meters. The building, made entirely of wood, has a helmet-shaped roof unique in China. It is supported by four rows of columns, twelve corridor columns, and 20 eaves columns.

Together with the Pavilion of Prince Teng and the Yellow Crane Tower, Yueyang Tower is one of the three great towers of Jiangnan. Of the three, it is the only one to retain its original Qing-dynasty structure. The Yueyang Tower Scenic Area offers views of the lake from the western shore of Dongting Lake. It covers 670 mu, or about 44.7 hectares, and is divided into a restricted administrative area for the protection of cultural relics and an open recreational area. Attractions in the grounds include Sanzui Pavilion, Xiao Qiao’s Tomb, Zhanyue Gate, Bianhe Street, and Lv Dongbin’s Temple.

Sanzui Pavilion lies north of Yueyang Tower. The building was constructed in 1775 and rebuilt in 1867; it was given the name Sanzui Pavilion during this reconstruction. Its dates and change of name make its architectural history tangible in a different way from the tower’s dimensions and wooden construction.

Island and wetland landscapes

Junshan Island is a 0.98-square-kilometer island in Dongting Lake, with 72 peaks. It lies twelve kilometers from the shore, opposite Yueyang Tower. Junshan has reed beds, shrubs, trees, tea gardens, and areas of water and mud; it is home to both forest birds and waterbirds. In the Junshan Island scenic area, you can walk among green trees and red maple trees and enjoy the autumn air and clear water.

The East Dongting Lake National Nature Reserve protects the lake’s wetland ecology and biological resources. It was established in 1982 and upgraded to a national nature reserve with the approval of the State Council in 1994. It had already been included in the Ramsar Convention in 1992, becoming one of the first six wetlands in China to be listed there. The area is an important wintering, breeding, and stopover site for waterbirds; millions of geese and ducks stay there each year. It is also a destination for ecotourism and environmental education. Check current visitor access in advance if you plan to visit Junshan or the reserve.

Discover Dongting Lake at the museum

The Dongting Lake Museum is located in Liulinzhou Town, Junshan District, Yueyang City. An official museum description dated June 19, 2025, lists collection, research, exhibitions, education, and tourism among the museum’s functions. The Natural Paradise exhibition area highlights the wildlife of Dongting Lake and its habitats. Exhibitions, interactive games, graphic explanations, and selected species illustrate the lake’s plant and animal life.

The exhibition Dongting: A Peerless Lake presents the geological development of Dongting Lake and its formation through exhibits, immersive landscape reconstructions, and multimedia films. The museum thus brings two distinct nature themes together: the lake’s development over long periods and the diversity of its present-day habitats.

Trip planning and choosing accommodation

Yueyang’s major transport routes include the Beijing–Guangzhou Railway, the Beijing–Zhuhai Expressway, National Highway 107, and the Yangtze River. For your specific journey, compare the connections that suit your travel dates. When choosing a hotel, your thematic priorities can be a starting point: first decide whether architecture and exhibitions or island and wetland experiences matter most, then compare the locations of the hotels on offer with your own plans.
