Kaifeng brings together impressive cultural sites offering very different glimpses into the city’s history. The Qingming Riverside Landscape Garden centers on the world of a famous painting, while the Iron Pagoda is recognizable by its distinctive shape and precisely stated measurements. At Daxiangguo Temple, a historic temple complex and intricate religious works define the site. The perspective that interests you most can help determine the focus of your trip.
The Song Dynasty at Qingming Riverside Landscape Garden
Qingming Riverside Landscape Garden is a large cultural theme park in Kaifeng. It was reconstructed at a 1:1 scale based on Zhang Zeduan’s famous painting “Along the River During the Qingming Festival.” Covering more than 600 mu, the garden combines this artistic inspiration with performances and experiences related to intangible cultural heritage; it incorporates numerous demonstrations of national intangible cultural heritage.
The visitor experience includes strolling among pavilions and halls in Hanfu clothing and watching folk performances. Those interested in the Song Dynasty will find not only a visual reference here, but also a cultural program centered on performances. The immersive live-action nighttime cavalry battle show “Yue Fei·Yancheng Victory” was introduced in the third development phase. The “Night Tour Qing Garden” project was also introduced in recent years as a nighttime Song-culture experience. If you plan to attend either of these shows, check the current schedule in advance.
The garden also features Dongjing Food Workshop Snack Street and a Food City with numerous regional snacks. In spring, many cherry trees bloom in Iron Pagoda Park, attracting visitors who come to take photos. This brings together a variety of experiences within Kaifeng: cultural performances, regional snacks and seasonal blossoms. If you want to include food options or a performance in your plans, check the current opening hours or schedule.
Pagodas and temples: distinct architectural styles
Kaifeng Iron Pagoda was built in 1049. The glazed pagoda is octagonal, has thirteen stories and stands 55.08 meters above ground. Its history also gives it a distinct character: it has survived repeated wars, floods and earthquakes. In 1961, the State Council designated it as one of China’s first nationally protected major cultural heritage sites. Iron Pagoda Park is located in the northeast of Kaifeng’s urban area and is a nationally classified 4A tourist attraction.
At Daxiangguo Temple, the complex can be understood as a sequence of buildings. Since its reconstruction during the Qing Dynasty, it has largely retained a south-to-north axis: a gate building is followed by the Hall of the Heavenly Kings, the Mahavira Hall, the glazed Hall of the Eight Treasures and the Sutra Repository. The arrangement of the buildings thus offers a different cultural focus from the single, widely described pagoda.
Among the temple’s striking works of art is an approximately seven-meter-tall, fully gilded, four-faced, thousand-armed and thousand-eyed Guanyin statue. Craftspeople of the Qianlong era carved it from a large ginkgo tree. The temple bell also brings together craftsmanship and city tradition: cast in 1768, it is about four meters tall and weighs more than 10,000 jin. Famous as the “Xiangguo Frost Bell,” it is counted among Kaifeng’s Eight Scenic Spots.
Another focus: the city’s history
Kaifengfu offers a glimpse into Kaifeng’s historical administration. During the Northern Song Dynasty, this important institution was responsible for administering the capital and its metropolitan hinterland. Together with the temple complex, pagoda and garden, it gives you more than one theme to explore on your trip: you can focus on historical institutions, religious architecture or cultural depictions of the Song Dynasty. This distinction is a useful starting point when looking for a hotel in Kaifeng: first consider which of these perspectives you want to shape your trip.
