Jiayuguan combines the history of the Ming Great Wall with museums, scenic spots and leisure activities. If you are looking for a hotel in Jiayuguan, you can first decide whether Great Wall and museum history, or perhaps water features, wine and a theme park, will shape your stay. To help choose a hotel, it is useful to sort out your sightseeing priorities before searching.

The Ming Great Wall and historic sites

The Jiayu Pass, the starting point of the western section of the Ming-era Great Wall of China, lies within the Jiayuguan city area. Nearby, the Overhanging Great Wall stands on the eastern slope of Heishan, north of Shiguan Gorge. It was an important passage on the ancient Silk Road and a military fortress in the western defense system of the Ming Great Wall. The First Beacon Tower of the Great Wall of China is also nearby; it is the westernmost beacon tower of the Ming-era wall. The pass and the beacon tower therefore represent different points in the history of the wall: the starting point of its western section and its westernmost beacon tower.

Another glimpse into history comes from the brick mural tombs dating to the Wei and Jin dynasties. They belong to the Guoyuan–Xincheng tomb group in Xincheng, about 18 kilometers east of Jiayuguan’s urban area. More than 1,000 tombs from this period are found in the wider area, which is known as an underground gallery. This figure refers to the tombs in the area, not just the brick mural tombs.

Museums between the Great Wall and the city’s history

The Jiayuguan Great Wall Museum is China’s first specialized museum dedicated to exhibiting the history and culture of the Great Wall of China. The Jiayuguan City Museum has a different focus: a 2024 report describes its city culture exhibition, “Great Wall · Steel City.” It explores Jiayuguan’s cultural identities as a Great Wall city and a steel industry city.

The same report mentions the exhibition “Pearl of the Gobi – Jiayuguan City’s Development Achievements,” which focuses on the city’s recent development and its achievements; its presentation is updated. As these exhibition details date from 2024, check the latest information before visiting. This lets you distinguish the museum’s focus on the Great Wall from its presentation of the city’s development without conflating the two topics.

Lakes, wetlands and distinctive places

The East Lake Ecotourism Area includes an artificial lake covering 560,000 square meters, along with landscaped promenades, viewing pavilions, bridges and a pier. The nearby Xincheng Caohu National Wetland Park is on a different scale: it covers 3,000 hectares, of which 1,379 hectares are designated as the planned core area and 488.6 hectares are wetlands. These figures describe different types of landscapes—a lake area with named facilities and an extensive wetland.

The Tola River Eco-Cultural Area is a nationally rated tourist attraction, Class 3A. Its facilities include a night-lit tower built in the Ming and Qing style, a large musical fountain and a water screen movie. Individual performances may vary; check current access and performance arrangements before visiting.

Wine and a theme park

At Zixuan Winery, visitors can observe the winemaking process, from harvesting, destemming, pressing, fermentation, sulfur treatment, blending and bottling to corking, and can take part in a wine tasting. In April 2010, China’s National Tourism Administration rated the winery as a national industrial tourism attraction, Class 4A. Check current visitor arrangements before your visit.

Jiayuguan Fantawild Silk Road Divine Painting theme park covers around 1,000 mu and features 45 major indoor and outdoor themed attractions, as well as more than 200 leisure and scenic projects. It is suitable for families with children and young people seeking adventure. Check current operating details before planning your visit. The offerings are quite distinct: winemaking and tasting are the focus at the winery, while the theme park brings together an extensive range of leisure activities.

Getting there and choosing a hotel

The G30 expressway and G312 national highway run through the Jiayuguan area. Jiayuguan South railway station is an important transport hub on the Lanzhou–Xinjiang high-speed railway. Jiayuguan Airport is a Class 4E international alternate airport on a Eurasian flight route. As individual connections and schedules may change, check the latest train and flight schedules for your trip.

When choosing a specific hotel, you can use your preferred themes—Great Wall and museums, landscapes or leisure—as a starting point.
