The Yellow River runs through Lanzhou from west to east. It divides the city into two areas while also connecting its two sides. This dual role shapes Lanzhou’s geography and provides a guiding thread for your trip: the Yellow River Scenic Line stretches along the river, serving as an ecological landscape corridor and urban scenic route. When planning a visit to Lanzhou, you can first consider whether to focus on riverside scenery and bridge history, or on museums and local traditions.

Riverside scenery, bridges and waterwheels

Zhongshan Bridge is a century-old iron bridge and a surviving testament to the Self-Strengthening Movement. Below the bridge, riding a sheepskin raft is a tourist experience associated with the intangible cultural heritage of the upper Yellow River. The tradition was included in the first list of intangible cultural heritage of Gansu Province in 2006. Raft rides are seasonal, and operations may change; check current ride options in advance.

On the riverbank stands the Yellow River Mother sculpture. It symbolizes the river’s nurturing and protective role for Lanzhou and the city’s connection to its mother river. In this way, the Yellow River is visible not only as a geographical axis but also as a cultural touchstone for the city.

Lanzhou Waterwheel Park is a theme park on the Yellow River dedicated to waterwheel culture. It is divided into the Waterwheel Garden, Waterwheel Plaza and Culture Plaza. Twelve Yellow River waterwheels stand directly beside the river in the Waterwheel Garden; each is 16 metres in diameter. Their number, size and location offer a tangible introduction to this local cultural theme.

Museums and city history

The Gansu Jiandu Museum was founded on December 12, 2012. Its new building is located on Matan Cultural Island in Qilihe District, east of Lanzhou Old Street. As a state-run specialist museum serving the public, it brings together collecting, preservation, restoration, research, exhibition, interpretation, education and cultural experiences. Its four permanent exhibitions are “The Era of Jiandu,” “The Silk Road in Brief,” “Frontier Families” and “Written on Bamboo and Silk.” The exhibition titles give a sense of the museum’s thematic range—from writing on bamboo and silk to the Silk Road and frontier families.

Lanzhou Museum combines exhibitions with a historic site: it was built on the grounds of Baiyi Temple, dating from the Ming dynasty, and is itself a cultural heritage site with exhibition spaces. Its notable collections include painted pottery, particularly from the Majiayao culture; paintings and calligraphy by local figures from the Ming and Qing dynasties; and cultural relics kept in Baiyi Temple Tower. The two museums therefore offer different perspectives: the Gansu Jiandu Museum focuses on its named permanent exhibitions, while Lanzhou Museum brings together the temple site and its collections.

Bridge history also has its own museum: the Lanzhou Yellow River Bridge Museum presents the history and development of bridges over the Yellow River through scale models, reconstructed historical scenes and audiovisual materials. The Intangible Cultural Heritage Exhibition Hall in Jinchengguan Cultural Park showcases representative local traditions through miniature landscapes and original objects. Examples include the Lanzhou Taiping Drum custom, the Yellow River waterwheel, Lanzhou Guzi and Yongdeng Gaoqiao.

Local traditions and trip planning

Lanzhou beef noodles are considered a signature local specialty, with distinctive regional characteristics and a strong cultural identity. They complement the museum visits with a culinary theme. The Heartlight Handicraft Shop at Zhongshan Bridge combines the presentation of intangible cultural heritage with hands-on craft activities and the sale of cultural products. Shop details and participation requirements may change; check current options if you plan to take part in an activity there.

You can plan your trip around different interests: the river and bridges, museum collections, local traditions or food culture. If you are looking for a hotel in Lanzhou, considering which of these sides of the city interests you most can be a useful first step.
