Placilla combines wine experiences with a local history marked by two significant years. At Viña Ravanal, activities vary in focus: creating your own wine blend, tasting, touring, or seasonal grape harvesting. If you are considering Placilla as a place to stay, wine experiences, architectural history, and local cuisine can each offer different criteria for planning your trip.
Wine Experiences at Viña Ravanal
At Viña Ravanal, you can blend, bottle, cork, cap, and label your own wine. This differs from a tasting alone: you create a blend and then go through the steps to produce a labeled bottle. The guided tasting includes three wines; according to the operator, it is available without advance reservations. Check this information again before your trip.
The Viñedos Centenarios tour offers a different combination. The vineyards, which are more than 100 years old, are still cultivated. The tour includes a walk through these vineyards, the winery, and the barrel cellar, as well as a guided tasting of four wines from the Gran Reserva and Premium ranges. This makes it different from the three-wine tasting mainly because it includes a tour. Tour details may change, so check them before your visit.
The Vendimia experience includes cutting grapes and traditional grape stomping. Since seasonal plans may change, check the dates before your trip. Momento Ravanal focuses on other elements: a selected Reserva wine by the fire in the Grand Lounge of Wine, a cheese platter with dried fruit, and the use of electric bicycles for rides through the vineyards. Availability may change, so check this offering in advance as well.
Local History and Rural Character
The Placilla Railway Station dates back to 1871 and consists of three typical buildings from the period in which it was built. Parroquia San Francisco de Asís was founded in 1905; its patron saint’s feast day falls on October 4. The station is therefore 34 years older than the parish; the two dates offer a direct comparison between the history of the railway station and the church. The historic center is also characterized by rural charm, beautiful manor houses with colonial architecture, and large areas of agricultural land.
The archaeological Piedras Tacitas are located in the municipality of Placilla, in the Rinconada de Manantiales sector. They are approximately 10,000 years old and protected under Article 21 of Chilean Law No. 17,288 on National Monuments.
Local Cuisine
In Placilla Centro, Tortillas de rescoldo are part of the local cuisine. Viña Ravanal’s Almuerzo Sabores + tour Privado package offers something different: a set three-course menu featuring local products. Menu details may change, so check what is included for your preferred date before your visit. The tortillas provide a connection to local food culture, while the package focuses on a specifically composed menu.
