Wine traditions, protected historic sites and a coastline stretching more than 100 kilometers give the Libertador General Bernardo O'Higgins Region many different facets. There are also forests, thermal baths and experiences centered around the starry sky. When planning your trip, you can start by deciding whether you’d most like to explore culture, food and wine, the coast or nature.

Wine and local traditions

In the Colchagua Valley, renowned wineries offer tours with technical wine tastings and gourmet pairings. Viña Viu Manent is an attraction on the Colchagua Valley Wine Route and was founded in 1935. Before visiting, it’s a good idea to check the current offerings and reservation options.

The Tren del Vino is a themed route in San Fernando. An older description of the train journey mentions the route from San Fernando to Santa Cruz, wine tastings and tastings of local cheeses. Before planning your trip, check whether a journey is offered during your travel dates.

Local traditions also have their place: the Fiesta del Chacolí de Doñihue is a festival centered around Chacolí, a liqueur typical of the region. Check the dates and program in advance. At the Salinas de Barrancas near Cáhuil, salt has been harvested for centuries through a profession passed down from generation to generation.

History in specific places

The Iglesia de La Merced de Rancagua has been protected as a Historic Monument under Law 10.616 since November 11, 1954. It is associated with the 1814 Siege of Rancagua, during which Bernardo O’Higgins barricaded his troops inside the church. The surroundings of Casa Hacienda San José del Carmen El Huique are also protected: since August 29, 1996, they have been designated a Zona Típica under Decree D.E. 488, preserving the setting of a national Historic Monument.

The Museo Regional de Rancagua is housed in the Casa de Don Calixto Rodríguez. The house was declared a Historic Monument on January 24, 1980, under Decree D.S. 725. In Santa Cruz, colonial-style architecture adds to the cultural offerings. The Museo Colchagua presents the Pataguilla archaeological site as a reconstruction of the continent’s oldest archaeological bone find, dating to 9,000 BC.

Sewell in Chile has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2006 and is a former mining camp with more than 100 years of history. Access is controlled: tours are limited and take place only under the supervision of authorized operators. Check the access requirements before visiting.

Coast, forests and special experiences

Reserva Nacional Río Cipreses is suited to ecotourism; its trails pass through forests of Peumo and Quillay trees. Glaciar Universidad offers another perspective on the region’s natural connections: it feeds the Cachapoal and Tinguiririca rivers, which in turn feed the Río Rapel.

Punta de Lobos is recognized as a Reserva Mundial del Surf. Local surf schools offer beginner lessons in surfing, bodyboarding and windsurfing; check availability in advance. From Pichilemu, you can reach Punta de Lobos by local Colectivo, taxi, private vehicle or bicycle. Local transportation options may change, so check them before setting out.

From Santa Cruz, you can visit Observatorio Cerro Chamán to stargaze among the vineyards. A 2012 inventory lists a total of 22 runs at Centro de Ski Chapa Verde for skiers of all ability levels. Be sure to confirm separately whether the resort will be operating during your travel dates.

Termas de Cauquenes is a hot spring destination with a swimming pool, thermal baths, a restaurant and a park for walks. Check current opening hours and visitor requirements in advance. Not every protected area is open to visitors: Parque Nacional Las Palmas de Cocalán does not receive visitors and has no facilities for public use.

Using your interests to guide your accommodation search

If you’re looking for a hotel, the experiences that matter most to you can be a useful starting point: wine tastings, the coast and surf lessons, historic sites or nature. For time-sensitive activities such as train journeys, lessons and tours, it’s a good idea to check the current conditions before making plans.
