Bitter orange trees still line the streets of Nancagua, giving the town its nickname, Ciudad de los Naranjos. The town also has a history of architecture, cultural venues and traditions that can be seen in its surrounding area. Visitors interested in churches and historic architecture can discover in Nancagua different stories of rebuilding and change.

Churches, a Manor House and the Townscape

The Parroquia Nuestra Señora de La Merced was built in 1885. The 1906 earthquake caused the church building to collapse; it was rebuilt between 1910 and 1912. Its exposed-brick façade is supported by circular brick pillars. The building’s history and façade each offer a distinct perspective: one tells the story of construction, destruction and rebuilding, while the other shows the visible craftsmanship of brickwork.

The Centro Cultural La Casona also combines an older building with a later cultural use. It was built in 1887 as the manor house of Hacienda de Nancagua, which belonged to Juana Ross de Edwards. After sustaining severe damage in the earthquake of February 27, 2010, the building was restructured and reopened as a cultural center in 2015. The second floor houses the cultural, communications and tourism department, the Biblioteca PĂşblica de Nancagua, and spaces for community work, art and culture.

The Teatro Municipal de Nancagua can accommodate up to 502 spectators. A municipal tourism description calls it the oldest theater in Colchagua Province and says it was first built 90 years ago. Together with the church and the Casona, the theater offers another way into the town’s cultural history, although the three buildings do not share the same story.

Routes and Places Nearby

The Ruta Patrimonial Camino Real del Centro del Corregimiento de Colchagua passes through Nancagua. The places visited along the route are associated with preserving Chilean rural traditions. Its landscape description features vineyards, prairies and the sclerophyllous scrubland typical of central Chile. The route thus brings both the cultural history of local places and the landscapes of the central region into focus.

About four kilometers south of Nancagua, in the Puquillay sector, lies the Santuario de Puquillay. According to the municipal tourism description, the shrine is visited by thousands of worshippers from across the region on December 8, the Feast of the Immaculate Conception. The distance and the feast day provide two specific points of reference for anyone wishing to include this place in their exploration of the surrounding area.

An inventory from April 2022 listed the Centro Mariápolis in the commune of Nancagua as open year-round for conferences, retreats and other activities. The offerings described there also included courses in spiritual and human formation in the spirit of the charism of unity.

Traditions, Food and Wine

The municipal tourism inventory from April 2022 describes, at the level of the commune of Nancagua, the Fiesta de la Chicha in Puquillay Bajo, the Fiesta del Chancho and the Fiesta de Nancagua. Traditional preparations listed include cooked and raw chicha, as well as arrope. The description also lists food stalls serving traditional rural dishes and stalls run by local artisans. For the Fiesta del Chancho, the same inventory names more than 40 vendors offering arrollados, prietas, longanizas, perniles, lomitos, chicharrones and queso de cabeza, as well as performances by national and local artists. The Fiesta de Nancagua is described there as featuring artistic and cultural performances and stalls selling food and handicrafts.

At the level of the commune of Nancagua, the description mentions large vineyards known nationally and internationally, as well as some elegant, author-crafted wines with a personal, family character. For orientation, it is worth considering the historic sites in the town itself and the offerings described at the commune level as different facets of Nancagua.
