Escorial del Diablo is located in Parque Nacional Pali Aike, an area covered by a thick layer of basaltic lava and ash. It is considered particularly attractive for its scenery and scientific interest. This geological feature makes the park an appealing destination for anyone interested in the shapes and materials of a landscape.
Volcanic traces and trails in Parque Nacional Pali Aike
The park has hiking trails, picnic and rest areas, an information center and public toilets. Camping is not allowed inside the park—a key condition to consider when planning a visit. The park can be accessed via international route 255-CH; at kilometer 168, the road to Punta Delgada branches off. As road conditions and access may change, check the latest information before setting out.
Another geological and archaeological highlight is Monumento Natural Cueva del MilodĂłn. This protected area includes the sites of Cueva del MilodĂłn, Cueva del Medio and Cueva Chica, as well as several rock shelters. The archaeological significance of the caves and sites gives a visit a different focus from exploring the volcanic landscape of Pali Aike.
Caves and a trail with a viewpoint
From Puerto Natales, the route to the entrance of Monumento Natural Cueva del MilodĂłn follows Ruta 9 Norte and then Ruta Y-290. The protected area has an environmental information center, toilets, picnic areas and trails; souvenirs and snacks are also sold. A limited section inside the main trail through the cave is closed until December 31, 2026, without preventing the overall visit. Check the latest notice about the partial closure before your visit.
The Cueva Grande trail was designed for people with reduced mobility. With assistance, it is suitable for wheelchairs up to a viewpoint inside the cave. If this section of the trail is important to your plans, take the notice about the partial closure into account as you prepare.
Glaciers, fjords and different trails
In Parque Nacional Bernardo O’Higgins, the landscape is defined by mountains, ice fields, fjords and glaciers; the park is also home to significant wildlife and plant species. Access is possible only by water. Designated tourist navigation routes operated by various travel agencies lead into the park from Punta Arenas, Puerto Natales or Puerto Montt. As transport availability and routes may change, it is advisable to check this information before making plans.
For a specific comparison within the park, consider the trail at Lago Serrano: it is 1,200 meters long, has a moderate-to-easy difficulty level and ends at a viewpoint. A 250-meter section of the trail has been adapted for people with reduced mobility. The trail therefore combines a manageable distance with a clearly defined destination; the adapted section should be considered separately.
Parque Nacional Alberto de Agostini is shaped primarily by the Cordillera Darwin. Here, pristine forests and glaciers meet a mountain range divided by bays and channels that can be circumnavigated. The park protects, among other species, leopard seals, whales, sea lions, elephant seals, Peale’s dolphins and Chilean dolphins, also known as toninas. Landscape and wildlife are the main focus here, while the trail at Lago Serrano—with its stated length and difficulty level and its viewpoint—offers more specific guidance for a hike.
Glacial formations and regional highlights
In Parque Nacional Torres del Paine, the Cordillera Paine is considered the main attraction. Its formations were created more than twelve million years ago by the advance and retreat of glaciers. Visitors interested in how striking mountain formations came into being will find a different perspective on the landscape here than in the caves of Cueva del MilodĂłn or the basalt areas of Pali Aike.
The cities also have their own highlights: Punta Arenas is considered a strategic starting point for exploring Antarctica. Puerto Natales offers cuisine specializing in lamb and king crab. When choosing your travel interests, you can therefore consider these city highlights alongside the national parks and caves.
