A volcanic field of low cones and basalt lava flows, extensive forests, islands with large breeding colonies, and traces of the city’s history: Magallanes Province offers many different perspectives on landscape and culture. Its natural attractions range from volcanic features to the islands in the Strait of Magellan.
Volcanic landscape and trails near San Gregorio
In Parque Nacional Pali Aike, in the commune of San Gregorio, low volcanic cones and basalt lava flows shape a vast landscape. Much of the park lies within an extensive volcanic field. The plateau sits about 200 meters above sea level, and some hills reach a maximum height of 273 meters. These open areas, shaped by volcanic features, offer a different feel from the forests and wetlands of the other natural attractions.
The national park is accessed via international highway 255-CH. The main route comprises 168 kilometers of paved concrete road and 28 kilometers of gravel road; road conditions may change. The park has hiking trails, a visitor information center, and public restrooms. There are picnic areas, but camping is not permitted in the park. As access conditions can vary seasonally, it is worth checking the latest information before your visit.
Hiking between watershed and forest
Reserva Nacional Laguna Parrillar, in the commune of Punta Arenas, protects the Laguna Parrillar watershed, the San Juan River, and the streams that flow into the lagoon. Hiking trails provide access to the area. The focus here is on the interplay of lagoon, river, and tributaries—in contrast to Pali Aike, whose landscape is shaped by volcanic features.
Also in the commune of Punta Arenas, Reserva Nacional Magallanes has more than 60 kilometers of educational and recreational hiking trails, including a trail for people with reduced mobility and a flora trail. The forests include deciduous and mixed Magellanic woodlands, as well as peat bogs. Different types of vegetation meet a network of trails with a range of focuses. As the listed trails may change, check the latest information before your visit.
Islands and wildlife in the Strait of Magellan
Monumento Natural Los Pingüinos comprises Magdalena and Marta islands in the Strait of Magellan. They lie 35 kilometers northeast of Punta Arenas. About 7,000 pairs of Magellanic penguins breed on Isla Magdalena. A colony of imperial cormorants nests on Isla Marta; South American sea lions and South American fur seals breed at the island’s southwestern tip. The two islands thus offer different wildlife-watching opportunities within the same natural monument.
City history and Patagonian cuisine in Punta Arenas
In the historic center of Punta Arenas, the Museo Regional de Magallanes presents a historical exhibition on human settlement in the southern territory through to the city’s consolidation. It broadens the focus from natural and landscape history to the development of the urban center.
A culinary highlight is Mercado Municipal: a SERNATUR description dated July 15, 2021, mentions Patagonian dishes served there, such as conger eel and empanadas filled with king crab and cheese. These specialties bring regional ingredients together with the city’s cuisine.
History and nature at Parque del Estrecho
At Parque del Estrecho, Fuerte Bulnes is presented as a historical reconstruction connected with the 19th century. Easy hiking trails wind through forests of Magellanic coihue and lenga. The visitor center offers panoramic views of the Strait of Magellan, Puerto del Hambre, and Tierra del Fuego. Here, historical reconstruction, forest trails, and sweeping views can be experienced as different aspects of the same visit.
On the water and on foot at Parque Nacional Alberto de Agostini
Parque Nacional Alberto de Agostini features another type of landscape: mountainous islands and peninsulas covered by ice fields. Private companies offer scheduled tourist trips along designated shipping routes; availability may vary by season and operator. There are also self-guided hiking trails through evergreen forests dominated by Magellanic coihue. Water routes and forest trails offer two different ways to explore this landscape. Check current schedules with the relevant operator before planning a trip.
