A large marine sediment arch gives Monumento Natural La Portada its name: La Portada. The protected coastal landscape also includes a cliff shaped by marine erosion. Here, you can see how closely the coast’s striking shape is connected to the effects of the sea.

Coastal formations and wildlife watching

Within the same natural monument, the Sendero de Humboldt trail winds through the landscape. The easy walking trail is 430 meters long; the complete route is estimated to take 45 to 60 minutes. This gives you a manageable timeframe if you want to explore the coast on foot. Trail conditions and seasonal closures may change—check conditions before your visit.

Parque Nacional Morro Moreno brings together continental, marine and island habitats. Humboldt penguins, chungungos and sea lions can be spotted along its coast. Marked trails and information boards about the surrounding area help you find your way. Trail availability may depend on the weather and management conditions; check before your visit.

Desert formations and high mountains

In Valle de la Luna, water and wind erosion have created gray, red and ocher-colored mineral formations. The natural sanctuary lies in the Cordillera de la Sal. From San Pedro de Atacama, it is 15 kilometers away via Ruta 23 and can be reached by private vehicle, bicycle or on a guided tour. Road and access conditions may change.

You’ll encounter different landscapes in Parque Nacional Llullaillaco, where the Andes and Cordillera de Domeyko shape the scenery. The park includes a section of the Qhapaq Ñan and a high-altitude Inca sanctuary on the summit of the Llullaillaco volcano. Access to the park is restricted; permits are required for climbs or scientific expeditions. Possible activities include hiking on marked trails, observing wildlife such as mammals and birds, mountain biking and climbing the volcano. Follow the current CONAF permit and safety procedures.

Termas de Puritama also combine a distinctive landscape with a memorable nature experience: the thermal pools are set in a mountain gorge. The thermal water is said to remain at a constant 25 to 30 °C. Laguna Miscanti lies at an elevation of about 4,000 meters above sea level, in a natural landscape surrounded by high peaks. On the circuit around the Miscanti and Miñiques lagoons, you can spot flamingos, also known as parinas. Check current access conditions before planning your visit.

Culture and local ways of life

The region’s history is also reflected in its archaeological sites. Pukará de Quitor is an Indigenous fortress built by the Atacameño people in the 12th century. In Parque Nacional Llullaillaco, the remains of the Qhapaq Ñan and the high-altitude Inca sanctuary place the landscape in a different historical context. The access restrictions and permit requirements mentioned above apply to visits there.

In Toconao, an oasis shapes the local character: its pure water makes it possible to grow a wide variety of fruit. Reserva Nacional Los Flamencos offers camping and picnic areas, an environmental information center, public parking and public restrooms. Visitor services and facilities may change, so check their current availability in advance.

Planning your schedule

The experiences described also vary in the time they require. The Sendero de Humboldt takes an estimated 45 to 60 minutes, while tours from San Pedro de Atacama to Géiseres del Tatio set off at dawn, at around 4 a.m., so visitors can reach the geysers at sunrise. This departure time does not apply to every tour operator. Check the schedule for your specific tour.
