Maullín can be explored through different themes: religious traditions and local history in town, coastal destinations nearby, and wetlands across the municipality. This distinction can help you plan your trip, separating cultural points of interest in the center from nature destinations outside town and landscapes that extend across the municipality. You can then decide which themes you want to shape your stay: culture, coast or the wetlands of the Río Maullín.

Religious Center and Historic Town Center

Iglesia Nuestra Señora del Rosario and the adjoining plaza form the city’s religious and social center. Religious festivals, processions and novenas are held there. These include the Fiestas de Nuestra Señora del Rosario and Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria, as well as the Novenas del Carmen, del Rosario and del Niño Jesús. These traditions give the area a distinct cultural focus and anchor community gatherings in city life.

Plaza de Armas is in Maullín’s historic center, near the Costanera. Paseo Costanera is in the center and offers views of the Río Maullín; it also displays a salvaged cannon from one of the last Spanish strongholds. Plaza de Armas, as part of the historic center, and the Costanera, as a riverside promenade with river views, offer different perspectives on the town. Facilities along the riverfront may change; check current conditions before your visit.

Historic Routes and Maritime Infrastructure

Chilotes arrived by boat at Maullín’s colonial settlement site, then continued their journey along the Camino Real to Osorno and Valdivia. This historic sequence of arrival by boat followed by onward travel along the Camino Real sits alongside the port infrastructure Maullín has today: a platform for ferry docking and a port for coastal shipping.

The Municipality’s Wetlands

At the municipal level, Maullín’s wetland system forms a varied mosaic that includes tidal flats, salt marshes, sandy beaches, freshwater lagoons, swamps, estuaries and small waterways less than six meters deep. The range of forms shows that this is not a single landscape type. At the same time, the Río Maullín wetland system forms an aquatic biological corridor between the lake ecosystems of the Andes and the Pacific Ocean. Thus, different habitats in the municipality come together within a larger water system.

Nearby Destinations

Amortajado is near Maullín. Its landscape includes cliffs, a beach, and river and wetland landscapes. An observatory is used for birdwatching, including Chilean flamingos (Phoenicopterus chilensis). The focus here is on both the different landscapes and birdwatching. Check facilities before your visit.

Mar Brava is also near Maullín: a 13-kilometer-long beach known for its large waves for surfing. The two destinations offer different points of interest: Amortajado combines several landscape types with birdwatching, while Mar Brava stands out for its long beach and large surf waves. When planning, you can choose between a nature destination focused on wildlife observation and a long beach with plenty of waves.
