Llanquihue lies on the shore of Lago Llanquihue, the lake of the same name. The city’s defining features include viewpoints, its industrial and church history, public art and wetlands in the city center.

By the lake and in the city center

Llanquihue’s waterfront has a viewpoint overlooking Osorno Volcano; a second viewpoint is at Playa Los Cisnes. The renovated waterfront was inaugurated in 2019 and includes a multi-purpose sports court, an amphitheater, a boat dock, lighting and green spaces. Individual facilities may change; check their current status before planning a specific visit.

Playa El Cisne is the main beach in the resort town of Llanquihue and a central place for tourism and recreation in the municipality. There are also seven wetlands in the city center. Their streams connect with Lago Llanquihue and the RĂo MaullĂn, adding other water features in the urban area to the views of the lake.

Cultural sites and traces of history

Calle Techada is a central urban cultural space connected to the city’s civic center. A notable site in the city’s industrial history is Molino Porvenir on Calle Pérez Rosales. It was formerly known as Molino Werner; this agro-industrial heritage site dates back to 1943. Its infrastructure has remained largely intact and is considered by the local community to be an important testament to Llanquihue’s cultural heritage.

At the southern entrance to Llanquihue, Parque Las Esculturas displays numerous works from the sculpture symposiums held each year. A large sculpture represents the connection between the Indigenous, Spanish and German cultures from which Llanquihue’s culture emerged. Public art is thus a distinct part of the city’s cultural identity, alongside its older industrial history.

The ruins of Llanquihue’s old pier recall its former role as a link between places along the shores of the lake and are considered a symbol of the city’s historical heritage. The Iglesia Evangélica Luterana de Llanquihue is also connected to the history of the place: it was built in 1975 after the previous church building was destroyed in the 1960 earthquake. The church has excellent acoustics and has served as a venue for musical performances in the municipality of Llanquihue.

Another historical landmark is in the municipality of Llanquihue, 8 km from the town of Llanquihue: the Monument to Our Ancestors, also called Monumento a Nuestros Antepasados. It was erected in 1937 in honor of the first German colonists. The monument is made of stone and bronze plaques bearing the names of 80 pioneers. Paseo de las Esculturas del RĂo MaullĂn is a public recreational space in the municipality of Llanquihue. There, visitors can experience the biodiversity along the riverbank and a selection of sculptures from the sculpture symposiums.

A dated festival program
