At Lahuen Ñadi Natural Monument, the El Chucao Trail is accessible. It includes a 600-meter-long wooden ramp and a 1.07-meter-wide wooden walkway. Check the trail facilities information again before your visit. In Llanquihue Province, this specific trail design connects with other nature-related attractions, such as wildlife watching, viewpoints and wetlands.
Forest and Wildlife Watching
In the forest or its immediate surroundings, you can spot species including the Chucao (Scelorchilus rubecula) and Darwin’s frog (Rhinoderma darwinii). If you are interested in birds or amphibians, these are two specific species to look for during a nature visit.
Viewpoints and Directions
Parque Nacional Alerce Andino has two viewpoints: one in Correntoso and one on the trail to Lago Sargazo. These are two different locations within the park that you can distinguish when finding your way around.
The routes to these places also have specific landmarks. From Puerto Montt, Reserva Nacional Llanquihue can be reached via Ruta 7, the Carretera Austral, as far as the Chamiza Bridge. The public V-65 road leads to Parque Nacional Alerce Andino from Puerto Montt via Correntoso to Lago Chapo; the route is 46 kilometers long. Both routes start in Puerto Montt, but lead to different protected areas and destinations. Road conditions may change; check them before setting out.
Wetlands and Trail Times
Humedales del RĂo MaullĂn Natural Sanctuary is known for the presence of Chilean flamingos (Phoenicopterus chilensis). It covers approximately 8,096.8 hectares and is located in the municipalities of MaullĂn, Llanquihue, Puerto Varas, Puerto Montt and Los Muermos in Llanquihue Province. The area given is approximate. Together with the five municipalities, it conveys the scale of this wetland.
For planning your schedule, Sendero Mirador RĂo Blanco in Reserva Nacional Llanquihue is one specific example: the section suitable for families is open before the river crossing and can be accessed daily from 9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Check the trail status and times again before your visit.
Provincial Boundaries and the Los Lagos Region
Parque Nacional Vicente Pérez Rosales lies almost entirely in Llanquihue Province; a smaller part is in Osorno Province. The park is also part of the Bosques Templados Lluviosos de los Andes Australes Biosphere Reserve. This helps put its location in context, both in relation to the province and the larger protected area.
The Los Lagos Region also provides a broader cultural context. The churches of Chiloé are a unique example of outstanding ecclesiastical wooden architecture in Latin America and bring together Indigenous and European cultures. The adjoining esplanades are venues for religious festivals; communal work such as the Minga, unpaid community labor, is part of the intangible value of the relationship between the communities and the churches.
