Tortel is located in Capitán Prat Province at the mouth of the Río Baker. Seven kilometers of wooden walkways made from Guaitecas cypress and a street-free layout define Caleta Tortel. When planning your trip, it is worth distinguishing between experiences in the town and excursions in the surrounding area.

Cultural Heritage on the Río Baker

The Pueblo de Caleta Tortel sector was declared a Zona Típica by official decree in 2001. There is also a cultural heritage destination north of the town: Isla de los Muertos lies in the Río Baker delta at its mouth and can be visited from Caleta Tortel. Its location sets it apart from the paths and sights within the town itself.

Tradition and Events

Since 2015, the Fiesta del Madereo has celebrated the logging tradition, which was important to the commune’s historical and economic development. The program includes demonstrations of craft techniques, as well as traditional music and dancing; individual activities may vary from one edition to another. The festival takes place every year at Parque Costumbrista de Tortel, usually on the first weekend of February. If you are planning your trip around the festival, check the specific event dates in advance.

Trails with Panoramic Views and Sporting Events

The signposted Sendero Cerro Vigía tourist trail passes over Cerro la Bandera in Caleta Tortel. From there, you can enjoy panoramic views of the Río Baker delta, the channels, and the Patagonian fjords. Trail conditions can change; check the current conditions along the route before setting out.

Sporting categories are also described: the municipal tourism plan dated September 2023 lists Tortel Trail as a sporting and tourism event in Caleta Tortel. It mentions a 4 km individual category and a 4 km children’s category. The intermediate duathlon comprises 8 km of kayaking and 4 km of trail running; the expert category covers 11 km of kayaking and 4 km of trail running. The description does not provide a current event date, so check in advance if you are planning to take part in the competition.

Excursions on and Along the Water

Operators offer day trips from Caleta Tortel to Jorge Montt Glacier. Options include traditional wooden boats or fast boats made of composite materials, usually with a capacity of around ten passengers. Check availability before your trip. Another boat trip can take you from Caleta Tortel to the mouth of the Río Pascua; here too, check locally whether the trip is currently operating.

Riverside walks along the Río Pascua offer the chance to observe local flora and fauna in their natural habitat. Tourists can travel by boat to Steffen Glacier via Canal Steffen and the Río Huemules. This trip depends on weather and river conditions. A municipal tourism plan dated September 2023 also describes a kayak route through the arms of the Río Baker, offering views of a large part of Caleta Tortel’s navigable waterways. These details describe different options: riverside trails along the Río Pascua, as well as kayak routes and boat trips for which conditions on the water should be taken into account.

Getting There and Planning Your Stay

The drive from Coyhaique to Caleta Tortel covers about 575 kilometers south along the Carretera Austral and takes approximately ten hours. From Balmaceda Airport, the entire route is overland, via the Carretera Austral or Ruta 7 Sur; allow around ten hours for this journey too. These travel times are estimates and vary with road and weather conditions.

When looking for a hotel in Tortel, consider whether your trip will focus mainly on the wooden walkways and Sendero Cerro Vigía, or also include excursions in the surrounding area. Check the specific availability of boat trips; for the trip to Steffen Glacier, weather and river conditions are also a factor. This allows you to take your route and planned activities into account together when planning your stay.
