Saint-Léon-de-Standon offers marked trails, a canoe route on the Etchemins River and tangible connections to local history. Nature and cultural heritage therefore offer distinct areas of focus. When making your choice, the type of experience is especially helpful: exploring trails, following a route on the water, or taking a closer look at village history and architecture.
Trails and River
Les Sentiers de Standon are partly located in Saint-Léon-de-Standon. They offer more than 30 km of marked, developed trails for hiking and snowshoeing. The panoramas include mountains, valleys and river bends. Geocaches are located at certain points, so this activity supplements the trail network in specific places. Trail length, scenery and geocaches offer different ways to get a sense of the trails.
Another activity is the Circuit de canot/kayak Le Beauchemin: a 23.5 km mixed canoe and kayak route along the meanders of the Etchemins River in Saint-Léon-de-Standon. The Sentiers focus on a trail network, hiking and snowshoeing; the Beauchemin is a named route on the water. This makes it possible to distinguish the offerings by activity rather than compare two similar routes.
Village Centre and Architectural History
The Circuit patrimonial runs through the village centre and explores the history of Saint-Léon-de-Standon through its built heritage. The Musée Espaces Mémoires vivantes is located in the church. The church stands in the heart of the village at the corner of Route de L’Église and dominates the landscape. On September 3, 2013, the municipality recognized the Église de Saint-Léon-de-Standon as a heritage building. It is therefore both the location of the museum and a municipally recognized heritage site.
The Ancien presbytère de Saint-Léon-de-Standon is a distinct architectural feature. Built in 1885, the building is in the Second Empire style, which is common in Bellechasse for this type of building. Its features can be seen in the roof and exterior cladding: it has a mansard roof covered in Canadian sheet metal, gabled dormers and shingle siding. The Ancien presbytère has both historical and architectural heritage value. Its structural details make the style description concrete, while its regional classification establishes its connection to Bellechasse.
The Premier cimetière de Saint-Léon-de-Standon is also part of the village’s historical heritage and has recognized heritage value because of its historical significance. Together, these sites offer different cultural perspectives: the Circuit patrimonial explores the built heritage in the village centre, the Presbytère combines historical and architectural significance, and the cemetery’s primary importance is historical. Visitors interested in architectural history will find precisely described details at the Presbytère; those looking for a historical focus can also include the cemetery in their exploration of the village.
