La Pocatière offers different ways to experience culture and nature: a museum about agriculture and food, trails connected to the town and its landscape, and a botanical garden. The Halte marine La Pocatière also combines an exhibition about the salt marsh with privileged access to the St. Lawrence River and the salt marsh. When planning your visit, the main question is whether you are more interested in exhibitions, local history, plants or outdoor trails.

Agriculture, local history and remembrance

At the Musée québécois de l’agriculture et de l’alimentation, ethnographic and zoological collections of specimens are presented alongside displays of historical customs and occupations. Reconstructed living spaces, toys, instruments and clothing from earlier times provide further insights. The displays may be rearranged over time. The museum’s mission and exhibitions focus on knowledge and practices relating to agriculture and food.

The museum was founded in 1974 and is historically connected to Canada’s first permanent agricultural school, founded by Abbé François Pilote in La Pocatière in 1859. The two dates mark distinct chapters: the school’s historical significance and the museum’s later founding.

The Circuit Fil Rouge La Pocatière is a walking tour with seven information panels in the town centre and an accompanying audio story rooted in the area. Passeurs de mémoire offers a different way to explore: it includes 24 self-guided, geolocated tours about the area’s history and influence. Separately, tailor-made genealogy walks trace the roots of the pioneer families of La Pocatière and Kamouraska. Tour content may be updated. The area’s history and family histories are therefore presented as distinct themes.

The Pont du Collège is in the Saint-Onésime-d’Ixworth sector of La Pocatière. It is the only surviving covered bridge in the MRC de Kamouraska and has been recognized as a historic monument since 2002. From the bridge, you can see a salmon river and the waterfall du Collège. Parc des Souvenances is near the bridge and the Rivière-Ouelle; several panels provide information about the surroundings. Park amenities may change.

Salt marsh, garden and trails

The Halte marine La Pocatière is home to an interactive permanent exhibition on the distinctive features and biodiversity of the Grande-Anse salt marsh. The exhibition is organized around five interpretation themes. Visitors also have privileged access to the St. Lawrence River and the salt marsh. Together, these offer an in-depth look at the habitat and the site’s relationship to the surrounding landscape.

The Jardin floral de La Pocatière is a 2.5-hectare botanical garden on the edge of montagne du Collège, in the heart of La Pocatière. More than 600 plant varieties are represented in specialized collections, and there are also nine themed gardens. Viewpoints offer panoramic views across the garden. Those interested in plant diversity will find a different focus here than in the collections of the agricultural and food museum: the emphasis is on botanical collections and designed garden themes, rather than customs, occupations and everyday objects.

The trails also differ in their focus. The Sentiers de la montagne du Collège are natural hiking trails in the heart of La Pocatière. The Sentiers d’Ixworth include a 2.2-kilometre nature trail along the river, with information about the distinctive features of the area’s many ecosystems. Here, the trail is paired with information about the landscape.

Boisé Beaupré has 10 kilometres of mountain biking trails for different skill levels and 5 kilometres of hiking trails. The stated distances may change if the trail network is redesigned. For choosing between options, Boisé Beaupré offers both mountain biking trails for different skill levels and a separate hiking trail network; the Ixworth trail, by contrast, focuses particularly on the ecosystems along the river.
