Choosing Paspébiac means visiting a place shaped both by the history of the fishing trade and by the contours of its coast. The Site historique national de Paspébiac tells the story of the cod trade and shipbuilding; the Banc de Paspébiac and the Barachois bring the landscape and birdwatching into focus. Winter activities add a seasonal dimension to these highlights.

Fishing History at the National Historic Site

The Site historique national de Paspébiac is where the Robin and LeBoutillier Brothers companies were founded. The site includes the LeBoutillier Warehouse, a five-storey wooden fishing-industry building. It is described as one of the largest buildings of its kind built in the Americas. Exhibits explore the history of the international cod trade through photographs, films, and interactive installations.

A dedicated shipyard exhibit presents construction techniques, vessel types, and numerous artifacts from the Robin Company shipyard. The Magasin général includes a photo studio with period costumes and a craft boutique. The blacksmith exhibit includes a meeting with the Robin Company blacksmith; visitors may be able to take home a nail forged on site.

Coastal Landscapes and Nature

The Banc de Paspébiac is a long, triangular strip of sand and gravel. It was shaped by the converging currents of Baie des Chaleurs. The Paspébiac Barachois encompasses beaches, salt marshes, and a diverse array of wildlife and plant life. Its distinctive topography offers a variety of viewpoints; it is also a place for birdwatching.

At Plage à Norbert, you can stroll on the sand and enjoy views of Baie des Chaleurs. Beach conditions and services may vary by season. The Paspébiac beach area features a lit promenade, wooden lounge chairs, and a playground. The Corridor des Nations includes a wooden pedestrian bridge to Baie des Chaleurs, built in 2024.

Fishing is also possible in Paspébiac: in front of the campground and at the wharf, you can fish for species including capelin, mackerel, and striped bass. Species availability and fishing regulations vary by season and according to applicable rules.

Cultural Events and Winter Activities

The Centre culturel Paspébiac has a multipurpose hall with seating for up to 300, a foyer overlooking the bay, and a café. Its program includes singing, comedy, theatre, dance, visual arts, improvisation, music, talks, and film screenings. Individual events change, so check the program and access details separately for your visit.

Near Paspébiac, the Centre de plein air Les Monticoles offers cross-country skiing, snow tubing, and snowshoeing. Its trails include 20 kilometres of marked routes with nine machine-groomed double tracks. A viewpoint at the centre’s summit offers views of the landscape and a chance to observe the stars.

Winter activities are seasonal, and trail facilities may change. Before planning, check current operating dates and conditions. This will help you plan a visit to the centre around your travel dates without losing sight of the area’s coastal and cultural highlights.
