If you choose Bonaventure as your destination, you can focus your trip on culture, coastal scenery or nature watching. In Bonaventure, these include the seaside promenade, canoeing on the river and the Musée acadien du Québec. Other named places offer beaches, museums, an ancient cave and theatre for young audiences. Consider which of these themes you want to shape your trip before choosing your accommodation.
Coastal Views and Activities on the Water
The seaside promenade in Bonaventure offers views of the coastal landscape. You can go canoeing on the Bonaventure River. Both experiences turn your attention to the water, but offer different perspectives: the promenade highlights the coastal views, while the river offers a canoe trip.
At Plage Beaubassin, you can fish from the wharf and collect shellfish. Caplan has public beaches; at Plage de la Rivière, the sea and the Caplan River meet. Fauvel Golf Course is also part of Bonaventure’s visitor attractions, offering another focus beyond the coast and culture.
Nature Watching and Remarkable Landscapes
The Grotte de Saint-Elzéar is more than 200,000 years old and contains numerous bones and formations. Its age and these finds make it distinct from the coastal sites as a nature-focused attraction. At the Île site in Saint-Siméon, a path leads to a sandy beach; you can also observe numerous bird species there. This gives you a choice of different nature experiences to plan around: a cave, coastal scenery, a beach and birds.
Museums, History and Regional Art
The Musée acadien du Québec in Bonaventure presents the history of the Acadians in Québec through a permanent exhibition and interpretive programs. The grounds also include several shops and workshops featuring works by regional artists and craftspeople. The exhibition and crafts complement the historical perspective with insights into creative work in the region.
In Paspébiac, the historic Banc-de-Pêche-de-Paspébiac site was classified as a heritage site by the Minister of Cultural Affairs on July 17, 1981. At the Site historique national de Paspébiac, you can try traditional dishes. In New Carlisle, the Espace René-Lévesque features a statue of René Lévesque and a permanent exhibition about the key stages of his life and work. The Cascapedia River Museum is located in the heart of Cascapedia-St-Jules and presents the river’s history through exhibitions, artefacts, photographs and personal accounts.
Theatre and Planning Your Stay
The Théâtre de la Petite Marée is a theatre company for young audiences that develops, produces and stages plays mainly during the summer. Its program includes a family theatre production in the theatre studio at the Centre Bonne Aventure in Bonaventure. As its theatrical activities are particularly focused on summer, check performance dates before your visit.
Make a note of the places you want to visit and focus your accommodation search accordingly. This lets you put together your own itinerary without trying to fit all the attractions into a single visit.
