Shoreline, Beaches and Trails

More than 100 kilometres of Lake Huron shoreline define Huron County. The region also has 15 sandy beaches: water and coastal scenery are a clear focus, while trails and cultural attractions offer other perspectives. The beaches are maintained naturally to protect the sensitive ecosystems of the shoreline.

You can also explore the landscape on foot: Huron County has more than 35 well-maintained hiking trails. The Guelph to Goderich (G2G) Rail Trail is another option for cycling and hiking. The Guelph to Goderich (G2G) Rail Trail is 127 kilometres long in total; in Huron County, it can be used for cycling and hiking. These figures offer different ways to find your bearings: a selection of hiking trails and a named, long-distance route for two activities. Check local trail conditions before setting out.

History and Rural Culture

The Huron Historic Gaol stands out for its octagonal design. From its opening in 1841 until it closed in 1972, it served as the county jail. Today, it is a National Historic Site visited by thousands of people each year. Its design, history of use and present-day status give the site several layers of history.

At the Huron County Museum, you can experience the county’s history and rural culture. One specific exhibit is the 1913 steam locomotive Engine #6275, displayed in the “Main Street Huron” gallery. Those interested in stories of rural Canada can also find a distinct perspective at the Blyth Festival: the professional theatre in the heart of Huron County has been presenting these stories for more than 50 years.

Performances and Art Along the Way

The Harvest Stage offers a different setting for theatre: it is a permanent, fully accessible outdoor amphitheatre. The stage extends into the audience area, with the audience seated on three sides. Performances take place each year from June to September and are presented in the evening. If you’d like to include this seasonal event in your plans, check performance dates before your visit.

You can also discover art along the Huron County Barn Quilt Trail. The trail follows highways and side roads through Huron County. Well over 200 community artworks are spread across the county; visitors can use a map to find them and learn their stories. If you’d rather follow a self-guided tour with specific photo stops, you can choose the Central Huron Giant Chair Tour through Clinton and surrounding communities. It features nine oversized red wooden chairs at photo stops. Both experiences combine exploration with a route of your own, but each has a different focus: community artworks and their stories, or distinctive photo opportunities.

Huron County brings together coastal scenery, hiking and cycling opportunities, theatre and historic sites. You can focus your trip on the Lake Huron shoreline, explore rural history, or take in art and performances. These themes offer different starting points, without requiring a single visit to encompass every side of the region.
