Exeter combines outdoor experiences with art, architectural heritage and community recreation. When planning, consider how much time to allow for the South Huron Trail and whether seasonal water attractions or a visit to the arts centre should be part of your stay. This helps you weigh up a longer outing, a short walk and cultural activities.

South Huron Trail: choose a route to suit your schedule

The South Huron Trail is eight kilometres long, open year-round and accessible. It passes through the scenic Ausable River valley and connects MacNaughton Park in Exeter with the Morrison Dam Conservation Area. Check local notices for temporary conditions or closures. For shorter or longer nature outings, the trail offers 2-, 4- and 8-kilometre routes; outings can range from about 20 minutes to two hours.

In Exeter, the South Huron Trail starts at MacNaughton Park, follows the Ausable River and crosses bridges to Lions Park before returning to MacNaughton Park. This route gives the trail a clear connection to the town, while its link to the Morrison Dam Conservation Area also shows how the trail connects Exeter with a destination beyond town.

Parks and seasonal water attractions

MacNaughton Park is beside the Ausable River dam on the east side of Main Street and is the starting point of the South Huron Trail in Exeter. It has a covered pavilion with an electrical outlet and a nearby playground. If you’re counting on these amenities, check municipal notices, as park facilities can change.

The Exeter Splash Zone is next to the Exeter Pool at 49 MacNaughton Drive. It is unsupervised, and use is at your own risk. It operates seasonally and may close due to weather, so check operating information before your visit. The Victoria Park Wading Pool is in Victoria Park at 109 Huron Street West, at the corner of Huron Street West and Carling Street. This pool also operates seasonally; check its current operating status before your visit.

Art, architectural heritage and ice sports

The South Huron Arts Centre is a local arts centre in Exeter United Church at 42 James Street. People of all ages can take part in arts programs there as learners or volunteers. These include classes, exhibitions and performances in visual arts, music, traditional arts and crafts, drama and dance. As schedules can change, check the latest information for a specific date.

Exeter’s architectural heritage can be seen in its varied details. Built in 1895, Carling House features Victorian dentils and decorative mouldings, intricately carved original double entrance doors and original stained-glass windows. The 1894 Hooper House is distinguished by its entirely white-brick exterior, red brick window surrounds and original stained-glass windows. Exeter Town Hall dates to 1913 and is designated as a heritage building for its architectural and/or historical significance.

Another option for a themed activity is the South Huron Recreation Centre at 94 Victoria Street East. It hosts ice-related programs run by South Huron Minor Hockey and the Exeter Skating Club. As program details can change, check the current schedule if you want to plan your stay around a specific activity.
