More than 20 large-scale murals featuring lifelike country music portraits and tributes on the Merritt Walk of Stars highlight different aspects of country music. You’ll also find historic buildings, museum exhibits and contemporary art. For planning, you can consider the options separately: local history, country music or exhibits on local topics.
Historic Sites in Merritt
Baillie House Historic Site and the Visitor Information Centre are located at 2202 Voght Street; the Nicola Valley Museum & Archives is at 1675 Tutill Court. These addresses give you specific reference points for choosing your cultural stops. Baillie Property is considered a symbol of Merritt’s first major urban development in the areas of residential, commercial and industrial activity; the house was built in 1908. The Heritage Commission invites visitors to follow the Heritage Walk.
The Coldwater Hotel in downtown Merritt was also built in 1908. Its copper-clad dome is a city landmark. The shared construction year offers a clear point of comparison: Baillie Property highlights early urban development, while the Coldwater Hotel is known for its distinctive dome. The Canadian Country Music Hall of Fame is housed in one of the oldest heritage-designated buildings in downtown Merritt, adding another building site to the historical perspective.
Country Music: Handprints and Murals
The Merritt Walk of Stars is a self-guided country music walking tour. Its tributes include more than 70 handprints and one footprint of Canadian and international country musicians. The plaques are displayed in wooden frames along Merritt’s streets.
The Downtown Merritt Mural Walking Tour offers a different focus: it features more than 20 large-scale murals with lifelike portraits of well-known country singers and songwriters. Comparing the two formats, the Walk of Stars centres on handprints as tributes, while the mural tour focuses on portraits. This lets you choose based on the form of presentation without combining the two offerings into a single tour.
Museum and Art
The Nicola Valley Museum & Archives shows visitors artifacts relating to the history and culture of local First Nations communities, including clothing, tools, artworks and jewellery. Other exhibits explore the significance of mining in the Nicola Valley, its development, and its effects on local communities and the environment. These topics offer different ways to explore the region: one perspective on communities and culture, and another on the history of mining and its impacts.
The Nicola Valley Arts Gallery presents new artists each month. Since the exhibition lineup can change, check which artists are currently on display before your visit. This lets you plan a gallery visit around the presentations on view at the time.
