Two clearly distinct themes come together in Vetrino: in Neofit Rilski, the historical complex “Neolithic Settlement” takes center stage with its archaeological and historical displays; near Nevsha, protected landscapes and rare plants define the nature theme. Those wishing to combine cultural history and nature can find both here, while keeping the different locations and focal points in view.
Archaeology in Neofit Rilski
The historical complex “Neolithic Settlement” presents the Neolithic and Chalcolithic periods. On display are Chalcolithic houses, ceramic objects and a pile dwelling. The Thracian Museum in the complex extends the historical span from the Chalcolithic to the Second Bulgarian Empire. Paintings, weapons and household objects are displayed alongside reconstructions of ships and carts, as well as replicas of Thracian treasures. Frescoes from the “Alexandrovka Tomb” are also on display. The range of topics thus extends from early settlement forms to later historical depictions and objects.
Visitors can also try archery on the grounds. This adds an on-site activity to the museum exhibits: you can explore the site through both the periods and objects on display and the archery experience.
Protected Landscapes and Rare Plants near Nevsha
Taushan Tepe is a Natura 2000 site protected under Directive 92/43/EEC. The area in the lands of Nevsha is considered a refuge for ancient steppe vegetation; dozens of rare plant species grow there. One particularly noteworthy species is the critically endangered “Trizhilkova Metlichina”: in Bulgaria, it grows only on Taushan Tepe hill near Nevsha.
Other protected landscapes have different focal points. “Goliamo i Malko Bulo” in Nevsha covers 1,975 decares and protects a characteristic landscape as well as habitats for protected plant and animal species. The protected landscape “Trizhilkova Metlichina” serves to protect a plant species and its habitat. The distinction is useful: one focuses on landscape and habitats, while the other protects a plant species and its habitat.
Nature Trail and Cycling Routes
A nature trail near Nevsha, completed in 2025, runs entirely through a protected area and leads to the natural monuments “Goliamo i Malko Bulo.” Several cycling routes have also been created in the area around Nevsha. This offers different options for planning a nature outing: a named nature trail with a specific destination and several routes for cycling trips. Check locally on the current condition and maintenance of the cycling routes before setting out.
Folklore and Ethnographic Heritage
In Gabarnitsa, the ethnographic complex “Rodna Stryaha” is housed in a restored old house that was converted into a museum of rural life. The museum collection’s offerings at the time included demonstrations of hand knitting and weaving. Check in advance whether such demonstrations are held today.
A local folklore ensemble and an orchestra in Gabarnitsa performed traditional customs, songs and dances for tourists. Check locally whether performances are currently taking place. In Nevsha, the “Nevsha Sings and Dances” festival has become a celebration of folk art; check its event dates separately.
Historical Sites in the Nevsha Area
The historical heritage of the Nevsha area includes three fortresses and associated settlements that were inhabited in Late Antiquity and the Middle Ages. There is also a rock monastery, rock cells and necropolises. These sites complement the collections in Neofit Rilski with further archaeological and historical topics. Before visiting, check locally on the physical condition of the sites and public access.
