Shkorpilovtsi can be explored through two very different themes: a protected dune area and archaeological traces at the southern end of a footpath. This gives your trip planning a clear focus. You can decide whether you want your stay to include the landscape by the sea, the cultural history of the place, or both. Both themes are brought to life through named locations and features.

Dunes and forest habitats

The Kamchiyski Sands protected area also includes land in Shkorpilovtsi. A figure published in 2024 gives its total area as 4,537.794 decares. The protected area preserves Bulgaria’s largest dune complex and includes all types of dune habitats. The dune habitats transition into riparian and oak forests. So, to understand the landscape, it is important to consider not only the dune complex but also its transition to other habitats.

Driving motor vehicles outside existing roads is generally prohibited in the protected area. Exceptions apply in emergencies and disasters, and for certain fire prevention, rescue, inspection and security duties. If you are travelling by motor vehicle, therefore, stay on existing roads.

A footpath along the shore and dunes

The Kamchiyski Sands interpretive trail is described as a footpath with a northern and a southern branch. Both branches run along the seashore and the sand dunes. The route description thus brings together two of the area’s defining features without reducing them to a single landscape. This combination is a useful planning reference if you are particularly interested in coastal and dune landscapes.

The route guide published in 2015 gives the starting point as the junction where the Novo Oryahovo–Shkorpilovtsi road turns towards the coast, near the former Izgrev campsite. It states that the route’s parking area can be reached by car or bicycle. Parking conditions and facilities may change; check these details before your visit. The campsite’s historical name is a reference point for the stated starting point, not an indication that it is currently operating.

Archaeological traces at the southern endpoint

At the southern endpoint of the path, an archaeological site is located in the Shkorpilovtsi resort complex. It includes a partially visible early Bulgarian earthwork rampart measuring 2,125 metres in length. The rampart runs along both banks of the Fundakliyska River at its mouth, and is part of a larger archaeological complex in the Shkorpilovtsi area. The site thus offers a tangible connection to early history, alongside the landscape.

The two themes are easy to distinguish when planning your trip: the protected area represents dune habitats and their transition to riparian and oak forests; the archaeological site leads to the rampart at the southern end of the footpath. If you are looking for accommodation in Shkorpilovtsi, you can first consider which of these themes you would like to spend more time exploring during your trip.
